My wife and I are looking for a kayak, or a couple of kayaks, to take our two labs with us. We were looking at the Native Ultimate 16 tandem, or two of the Native Ultimate 14.5 in the solo configuration.

Was wondering what other people were paddling with their dogs?

Dad uses an inflateable raft since the only way we have to get it upriver is to park our car and hike up the towpath. We then raft 7 miles or so back to our car. We`d like to switch to a kayak some day but will have to solve the problem of getting it upriver. Good luck in finding a suitable kayak. Calling REI might help.dog

I know it has been a while since anyone has responded to your topic. I work at REI and just became the proud pappy of a flat coated lab. I work with several paddlers who own adventure dogs and if you haven't already picked your boat, ill ask them next time i'm at work what they would recommend....

Walter, now the silly thing let me join!!! Here is my take on a great kayak for paddling with dogs:
I am in love with my Pamlico by wilderness systems. There is plenty of room in the front for even a large dog and they are extremely lightweight and yet also extremely stable. I am not small... but I have no room problems with the Pamlico. I have the shortest one they make and it only weighs 43 lbs. I find two kayaks like the Pamlico are better than a tandem one, which I had in the beginning. I had an Old Town Loon, but it was way too big and way to heavy for me to put on my car, even with the hydralic lift from Thule. We also have an Old Town Otter which is a great little kayak but it is too small for an adult and a dog to fit comfortably. My kayaking friend is only 13 and tiny and she and my mini poodle, Toto, fit in that one with no problems. I use the Pamlico and take the other two poodles with me.
