This is perhaps on the edge of topical for this group, but I'll make the case and hope the other moderators don't give me the swift paw of justice!

Mama's been shopping for medical insurance for me and would really like testimonials from experienced users about the various companies and plans. Do you have insurance? How is the coverage? Is it easy to use?

If you have experience or thoughts on the matter we'd very much like to hear from you.

Hi Rhys!wave

We don't have medical insurance although we did ALOT of research on it because we thought about doing it for us too.

I can say that after speaking with lots of owners around us and also on dogster, it seemed that most of opted out. They typically set aside an account and put money towards it if there was ever an emergency or an illness. Also, many who didn't opted to do a credit set up by the vet and pay over time.

In the end, I think it depends on your experience and I know that with some of us who have been at a critical point of our pup's care would hate to choose between an option that is highly expensive or letting a pup go. Sometimes, it's worth the investment especially if a certain breed is highly susceptible to certain extreme illnesses, are highly active or can be exposed to more injury than others.

I hope you figure it all out and let us know what you decide what to do!way to go

You can see the rates and ratings of all pet insurance at

http://www.petinsurancereview.com/dog.asp

We just bought health insurance and we chose Pet Plan U.S. bronze plan at www.gopetplan.com They pay 80% of what your vet charge and not their own rate schedule. That way, they cannot say your vet charge to high and refuse to pay their portion. Also, their rates are a lot more reasonable for health coverage also and not just accidents. I am 7 years old and it cost $348 per year and we can pay in 4 payments of $89 quarterly.

We have never made a claim though so we don't know how good that is. They have very high rating from other users so hopefully they are good.

My fursis Kiki found out she has liver problems last year and now no one would sell insurance to her anymore. Her vet care are very expensive sometimes.

Sure do appreciate the input, pals! Our family tends to be an expensive one (Mom says that the animals who live here found us because they're too expensive or time consuming for other families), so over the long run I might be able to save 'em some money if I use my allowance to pay for insurance.

wave I bought insurance for Sophie a few months ago and it has already come in handy. Last week she had a bout of pancreatitis and it has cost over $700 and counting (she is doing very well but has to go back for a follow up blood test in a couple of weeks). We submitted our claim to PetPlan so hopefully we will be able to tell you how it goes very soon. way to go

Sophie has an emergency fund also but half of it is now gone due to this illness...so I still think the insurance was a good idea since at least a portion of it will be reimbursed and I can still set aside that money for her.
