Do you let your Plotts run loose?

I'm a young Plott (maybe about 8 mos. now), and a ball of energy -- of course! I'm learning to walk nicely on the leash, but I'd really like to cut loose and run and get more exercise. My mom's heard too many stories, though, about hounds taking off and following their noses and never finding their way back home. It's actually how I ended up at the shelter, or so my people assume! But I've gotten loose a couple times and ran like crazy all over the place, but didn't take off. Would Mom be pushing her luck to start letting me off the leash on purpose? We live way out in the country (near the Nat'l Forest and MILES of nothing but woodland), so I just might be tempted to take off after all the gloriously wild scents!

Any thoughts?

Hi, marble, 2 or more plotts in the woods is a pack, and a beutiful sound, for sure, 1 plott I'm afraid, may be lunch. Try training on a long (50')?, clothesline, like you would for a bird dog. Try letting out a little more line each run, start with 10, or 20 feet, let her run to the end and call her back frequently, reward for coming, next run, more line. When she'll come back reliably from 50, you might try loose. Remember, we Plotts are HUNTING DOGS. For over 200 years we have been bred to chase the biggest nastiest critters in the woods! That is our heritage. That does NOT mean we are not one of the most loyal, loving, intelligent, (and sometimes very destructive), pets anyone could own. But who can fight 200 years of instinct/breeding, we're gonna run, and if something is around, we're probably gonna chase it, til it stops, or goes up a tree, that's just what we do.

Hi guys! My mommy has the same concerns. Although I will be 13 weeks old on Saturday, my mommy has discovered that letting me off my leash is asking for trouble. Mommy believes that it's not safe, due to the nature of my breeding instincts to let me run loose, because as soon as my nose hits the ground, it's a whole different ballgame. Maybe your mommy could get you microchiped if she's still considering letting you run and play off a lead. That way if you do ever get seperated someone can return you to your mommy. My mommy has my name and phone number on the inside of a light colored color, and has an appointment to get microchiped. Daddy has engraved a tag for me too. Good luck!!blue dog

My mom lets me outside off leash and no fence when ever she's outside. I stay close to her and within eyesight so I know nothing is going to happen to her. Living in the country like this is my favorite part about moving and totally made the stress of moving ok. Sometimes she lets me out with out her but if i get too close to a neighbor's yard she always calls me back. Mostly I just sit on the porch catch some rays and watch the birds. The sun feels so nice on my 8 yr old bones.
-- moms turn:
I think Tigger might be good outside due partly to being older. I also did some border training when I moved.

Anna gets to chill with her 'sister' Coal on the old golf course (that is no longer operating) because there is no chance of her getting hit by cars. Other than that, I only let her off leash at the dog park since she tends to get 'hound'stracted by anything that moves! blue dog

Im thinking of installing a under ground fence . gunner likes to climb the fence or dig under it. this way if he gets too close to the fence it will let him know. I just want him to be safe and be able to run and be happy all at the same time.
