I went last yr. to try dock dogs w/ my Blue Heeler & he refused to jump. I take him to the beach & he about draggs me in the water. I hold up toys & he jumps & splashes like crazy. How can I get him more confident to just try it at least once? If he tried it he would love it & boy can he jump.

It's the clear blue water. Last summer Duke had his first competition and also refuesed to jump. A few practice jumps off the return ramp gave him more confidence. Just yesterday we went to practice at an official Dock Dog faclility for a competition this coming weekend in College Station Texas.
Again Duke refused to jump and on one attempt he tried to leap from the dock to the return ramp and ended up going in butt first. Later with a lot of encouragement and excitement from teasing him with the bumper he made several good jumps.
A trainer at the facility told me it was a three step process. First build confidence just jumping off the dock. Then build speed, and finally develope height to the jump.
Next time take the jumps from the return ramp so he feels comfortable then try the dock. Whetever, never push him off.
