Jack

aka Mom's- Jogging Buddy

Hello all! I have noticed that Jack tends to "lean" on me a lot, or push against my legs with his body. He does this whenever he's walking or running with me, or whenever I start to pet one of the other dogs... he pushes his way between me and the other dog and leans against me. I first noticed it when we started running. He loves to go running, but he tends to be fearful of a lot of things we encounter (other animals, for instance)... so I at first thought this was just him being insecure. He doesn't appear to be trying to show aggression, but I'm wondering now if this is a dominance thing. I think Cesar Milan once said on Dog Whisperer that this was one way a dog shows ownership...? (So he's "claiming" me?) Anyone else have experience with this, or have any suggestions? It can be very irritating, especially when we are running and he trips me! I've come really close to eating asphalt a couple of times!

Mac has done this before as well. I have always assumed he was being protective.I have read in several books on this breed that Cattle dogs are extremely protective of there owners.I have read and also beleive that Cattle dogs would die for there owners as well.We live in a wooded area in upstate NY.In the fall we tend to get allot of coy dogs "wild dogs' in the fields around our property. In the past coy dogs have been known to be aggressive. When mac knows they are close he follows my husband and I and leans on our legs.Mac also does this around unfamiliar dogs and people. Now I am not a dog trainer but what we try to do is just show Mac that everything is ok and that we are safe.

Yes, I concur that this is likely a cattle dog thing. Buddy does the same thing when walking. He also does this when my daughter is sick. He lays on her or leans on her. When she moves around, he tries to force her back down again. I suppose you could train this out of your dog if you needed to.
