Ban the Deed - Not the Breed

I posted this in the Behavior & Training Thread as well....

OK, a little background. Shadow has bad hip dysplasia and Abby has a tendency to be a little dominant (for lack of a better word). We live on the edge of town and there is a corn field behind our house and frequently has deer, geese, turkey, etc in it. Both dogs will stand outside and bark their fool heads off - not really a big deal most of the time, our neighbors don't complain. However, when it is earlier in the morning or later in the evening we will call them to come in. Well, as of lately, Abby will start humping Shadow...I mean REALLY going to town! We've tried just about everything I can think of, right down to trying to physically removing her and NOTHING has worked. I wasn't sure how to do positive reinforcement with this, or if it would even work. Shadows hips can not handle this behavior. Any ideas?

Is you're dog neutered? If not that would really help.

Getting focus of your dog using treats and getting your dog to just ignore the other could work very well, too. Dogs have different gate-ways to training them. If you listen they'll let you know. . .

Yes, Abby is spayed and Shadow is neutered. I've been working more with the squeaky toy and it seems to be doing the trick! Apparently playing fetch is more important than whatever effect she gets out of humping Shadowsmile
Thank you for your response, thoughsmile

Annie, you're still a good pup!

I can't believe your dog would be humping when he's neutered. Seems strange. thinking

Anyway, I think that when your dog humps, you should have a gated time out area for a few minutes. Maybe that'll help.

I think it was a SHE that was humping. Some dogs hump out of love, Mama's found out. This may or may not be the case, but glad it stopped. big grin
