I adopted Bugzy my 3yr old Rat Terrier from a local shelter. 3 months into it, and month 3 has been the hardest. I live in a small apt and didnt think I needed to crate him. But like said now in month 3, he has been destroying things like a door yes a door.. I love him and am worried about him hurting himself rather than the damage (yes he is fixed). I found this very useful article: How to crate train an adult dog that I just started. It may take up to 4 weeks. Any suggestions from anyone would be greatly appreciated. Yes he has wicked seperation anxiety but is a very good and loving dog that doesnt even need a leash when we are in public.. Enough said for now.. Thank you to anyone who can help me and perhaps let me know its ok for him to be in a crate (I do take him for lots of walks and he does have a big backyard)

hi my name is belle and i want to say welcome to the rat lounge bugzy, i am still a pup but my mommy does crate me some times to keep me safe and make me rest a little ,i am into everything at times and i have been known to eat blankets and get into things that could hurt me ,so when mommy has to go some where that i can not go ,i am in my crate but when she gets home i get a lot of love and attention from her,so i may not like my crate a whole lot ,i know its a safe place to rest and chew on my chewies till mommy comes home to me,but the longest time i have been in there is a couple of hours. i hope someone with more crate experience will come and help you, kiss,s and hugs to you from belle.hug

Hi...crate training takes time and lots of patience, but it's one of the best things you can do for your dog. And it should be done gradually.

I started Molly very slowly (15 min. to 1/2 hr) and then increased the amount of time over several weeks/months. When I put her in the crate I give her a treat that she doesn't get at any other time...so it's something that she can't wait to get. Sometimes I even put the treat in the crate and close the door, then I get everything ready (my keys, coat, whatever) and then go to put Molly in the create. She's usually sitting right by the crate door waiting for me to open it so that she can get the treat! (I use the Kong liver paste in a kong toy...she goes crazy licking that kong toy! I used the puppy version when she was younger. As I said, she only gets this treat in the crate.)

Once, after I had been crate training for a while, I acted like I was leaving, put Molly in the crate, went out to the garage, opened and closed the garage door and sat in the car for a while to see how Molly reacted. She barked for a few minutes (and I mean just a few minutes), then she settled down because she didn't make a sound after that.

Also, at the beginning she would bark when she heard me coming home and the garage door open, but now she doesn't and she's stretching and yawning when I go to open the crate door, so I know she just woke up! So, obviously, she's just been relaxing!

She's almost two and I feel that I can leave her in the crate for 4+ hours. I haven't left her in the crate for more than 5 hours yet.

Molly's lucky in that I'm home most of the time, and I take her with me a lot. She's in the crate maybe 2-3 times a week for just a few hours.

Obviously, puppies can't be in a crate too long as they can't hold their bladders for very long.

I hope this info helps...I'm more than happy to answer any questions too. Woof and kisses from Molly too!

P.S...a special kiss to Belle, one of my pup pals!

Mom always gave me a kong with frozen peanut butter, apple sauce, canned pumpkin, beef/ chicken broth or canned dog food then filled with treats. The liquid stuff hold the treats in there better then just jamming a few in there. Mom bought enoughkongs for me to have one every day of the week. She makes them up on sunday and pops them in the freezer. When she leaves for work she just pull one out and that keeps me busy for a least an hour. Other things to stuff in there beef jerky, cheetos, cereal, kibble, carrots, etc.

Good luck
