 | | | | Hello,
Just thought I'd share a little information with you. I have a very sick little terrier. Tuesday, she didn't eat her food all day, which she sometimes does. She was still drinking water, eating offered treats, and playing like a good girl, so I wasn't too worried. Wednesday morning, though, I woke up to several puddles of bloody vomit.
I got her to the vet right away. She wasn't running a fever, but was very lethargic. I had to pick her up to put her in the car. Very unterrier like. I left her so they could run some tests. They ended up diagnosing her with Hemorraghic Gastroenteritis or HGE. Apparently it's very common in little dogs (like our little guys!) and young adult dogs. If it'd caught in time, it's treatable. But it's onset is so fast, and so aggresive that sometimes the dogs will go into shock and die within 24 hours.
My little girl has been at the vet for two nights now. They have her on IV fluids, antibiotics, and a third medicine to heal the bleeding spot in her gut. She's stable, but isn't out of the woods. (A friend who works at the vet said she was barking at cats, though, so that's a good sign.)
Please, if your dogs show any of these symptoms or are not acting the way they should, trust your instincts and get them to the vet! I felt like a fool calling the office at 6 am, but if I hadn't...well, I don't want to think about what would have happened! | | | | |
