I am a Westie that is 12 y.o. and I have Atypical Cushings. My mom and my vet had lots of tests done after my ALP levels were elevated and keep rising, right now they are at 305. I have had blood tests to recheck my ALP levels, ultrasound that found I have a mottled liver, enlarged adrenal gland on one side and questionable adrenal gland on the other side. Mom had the vet lady to to a UCCR test and LDDX test a couple weeks ago. The UCCR test tested positive for Cushings but the LDDX test was iffy so my vet said I am Atypical Cushings. I drink alot and need to pee more lately and pant sometimes when it isn't hot inside my house. My Mom took me to my Canine Chiropractor who is also a holistic vet and tradtional vet and agreed with my other vet that I need to be on 2000 mg of Flax Seed oil capsules once a day, Melatonin 3 mg 2 times a day and she also gave us a chinese herb called Rehmannia Six Formula once a day. The vet said to do the flax seed oil for 2 weeks and see if I tolerate it and then to add in the Melatonin for 2 weeks to see if I tolerate and then to add in the Rehmannia Six Formula. Not to start me on all three at one time in case I have a reaction and we wouldn't know what was causing it. My Mom also asked my vets about the Nutritional Blood Test from the Dr. Goldstein book Mom has. She is looking into that and the Adrenal Support Formula talked about in that book too.
From looking at me, you can't tell anything is wrong with me. I drink more water and pee more and sometimes pant but that is it. My Mom says I act like I feel ok.

Hello Winston, nice to meet you. My name is Millie and I've had adrenal-dependent Cushings for 1-1/2 years. I've been on a med called Trilostane since I was diagnosed and it has taken away every symptom. Like you, I drank a lot, peed a lot, panted, plus I ate everything in sight and had a big Buddha belly. HEHE!

Good luck to you, Winston. I hope you can get a handle on the Cushings. snoopy

Hi Winston!
Kelsey also had adrenal Cushings (inoperable tumor on one of the adrenals.) Trilostane worked wonders for us...relieved all of the symptoms including PU/PD, hypertension, and hair loss. She was like her old self again! It's expensive but worth it. Due to the drug's mechanism of action it must be given daily for the rest of the dog's life. However, in our case, we started a prey-model raw diet around the same time as the trilostane and after a few (6?) months or so we were able to quit the trilostane and none of the Cushings sypmtoms reappeared. We did not confirm the tumor regression with ultrasound, however there's a well adopted theory that tumor cells preferentially utilize carbohydrates for energy source, and if you decrease the carbs in the diet you can starve the tumor. Just something to think about !

In the end, Kelsey had to be put to sleep in August due to degenerative hip/spinal issues common in the breed, but for the last 2years of her life the Cushings was in remission.

Best of luck!

Hi Winston,

My mom posted my information on caninecushings.net. There are a great deal of very knowledgable people there. They helped my mom become more informed on the treatment of Cushings which made her more comfortable and confident in doing so. If you haven't gone to this yet, we highly suggest you do.
