Hello,

My name is Abby. I was train as a socail/therapy dog about 3 year ago. I have done very little work due to school but now I have alot of time.

I only done work with Abby in the 4-H club pet therapy. I had to stop with that because they got a dog at the place. The dog wasnt very happy when Abby came. We try talk to the place about but we had no luck.

I also took her to CCS but only 3 time. She did a wounderful job there with the childen but that was only so she could get her certificate from ADI.

Now I want to get back it to work with her and people. BUT I dont have any certification to show to place. Only picture and papper work to show.

I am not sure how importen is Certification is? I was suppost to get a certification but sadly we had a dog in our class that miss behave and made ADI disied not to give out any more ( do to they dont want be lieabl) but a complation letter inseted and i dont have that eather.

Dose any one got tips or advice for me?

Thanks

-Abby

Abbie,
Start with getting your CGC. If you go to the AKC website you can see what the requirements are. If you believe your dog can pass the test you can register to be tested by a local trainer. If not you can take a class or practice on your own to prepare. After you have your CGC, see if there are any therapy groups in your area. The benefit of joining a group is that you will be covered by their insurance. Most places that you visit will want proof of insurance. To get a "therapy" certification you need to take a seperate test with a formal therapy organization such as Therapy Dog International or Delta Society. This test will be the CGC plus exercises that pertain to working around wheelchairs, crutches, noises, children etc...
Hope this helps- good luck!

Audi and Bunjee barked it just right! Getting your CGC is the first step. You may check with your local hospital, schools, and nursing homes and ask which organizations they allow to visit. Both major hospitals in my area only allow Delta Society volunteers in their facilities. We recommend joining Delta Society, because they offer more to their members than TDI. I researched all the certifying organizations before deciding. They will have you complete a workbook on your own time, then attend a training session with other handlers, where you and your dog will be evaluated and given a rating that explains which environments your dog is most suited for. Keep working on it! Visiting folks who need company is a very rewarding minstry!

Thank you. But Abby has been train as a therapy dog up at ADI

This is the class we took:

Social/Therapy Team Training
Assistance Dog Education 1 unit

The Institute’s 17-hour Social/Therapy training prepares the handler/dog team to visit people in a variety of settings including nursing homes, schools, hospitals, and hospice environments. The course, based on the Bonnie Bergin’s BASICS & ABC’S of the SMARTEST SOCIAL/THERAPY DOG TRAINING, teaches health and interaction protocols together with dog training exercises.

The thing is we have NO profet that we took this class expet picture and handout.

Plz read my frist post agen. Thanks!

If the organization that you were previously with has disbanded, then the certification that you got from them isn't worth anything anymore. If you can go back to the ADI and ask for copies of your paperwork, that might help. But if you are unable to get copies of your certification paperwork then you may have to start over. In which case, you would normally start with your CGC (or whatever the equivalent is in your area). Then approach some other therapy dog organization like TDI, Delta Society, St. John Ambulance, etc. for their certification procedures.

If she has already passed a test and went through training, then she should pass the CGC and subsequent evaluations of other organizations without issue.

Hello

I am happy to say I have just call ADI and talk to my trainer. I told her that I want work more with Abby. A lot of place ask if i have a paper of were I got train. I don't have any thing for them.

She told me she would print out and get my paper sign by her and Bonnie. Then send it in the mail.

Final! we were train in the summer of 2007.
