We were taught the "no" command, a waved finger and stern look, by Anya's previous owner. Unfortunately, she seems to want to test everything we tell her "no" about. We are having particular trouble keeping her from the cat's food (that's probably a lost battle). Does anybody have advise for a "no" command for a deaf dog?

It could be a breed thing where she isn't listening to your gesture. We use that kind of thing for no. My lab mix listens to it better than my Am bulldog mix. Try no with an immediate redirection or have a toy or something right there as an acceptable thing to do.
Or try a leave it command instead. Leave it has had a bigger effect on the dogs here than any other command. I use a closed fist then open it facing down. Leave it.

Hi There, the American sign language book has a sign for "no" or "bad", where you touch your chin, then swat your hand , palm side down, like your pushing down & sweeping out & that can work for no also.
