I have had a ridgeback before so I know how hyper they are but my concern is that Elsie does not know her own size and she jumps all over Lime. She has a bad habit of taking her paw and holding Lime down by her head! (Lime is a toy chihuahua that only weighs 5 pounds and Elsie weighs 55 she is only 10 months so still more growing to do!!) I just dont know how to get her to be more gentle. I cant yell at her because then she thinks she cant play. When I walk them I have to pick up Lime because Elsie runs on top of her. She just cant get that she is bigger than Lime. Any suggestions of what I can do other than seperating them?

My RR is 4 1/2 mos old nad is 46 lbs, I also have a Wire Fox Terrier 9 mos old - 19 lbs. Their play can get rougher than I would like to see. They truly get along very well & share most things & love to cuddle together... but like I said their play can get rough.. I have been trying to use "easy" when they get to rough - sometimes it works - sometimes it doesn't,... but I am keeping at it..

Hopefully someone will have a good suggestion we both can use.

Luckily Lime has figured out to start yelping before Elsie even gets to her and Elsie slows down and gives her a kiss but sometimes Elsie catches her off guard. Just like you pups Elsie and Lime do love each other and sleep and even eat out of the same bowl together but I think Elsie thinks she is a chihuahua also lol.

You are so right - I don't think Maya realizes she is so much bigger, stronger & heavier than Farley... & of course Farley being a terrier is not going to back down & thinks he is super dog...LOL

Farley sounds like Lime!lol She will even run behind Elsie and bite the back of her legs or when Elsie lays down she bites the sides of her mouth and pulls lol. Lime can def. be an instigator!!! lol

Sounds like the 4 of them have a lot in common. They are such a joy in so many ways. I had a talk with Maya last night once again trying to explain things... We shall see

If I take Ange to the dog park she always wants to play most with the little dogs. It's ok if it's a tough-as-nails Jack Russell or other small, well-knit scrappy type. But she also wants to play rough with the more delicate little ones, so I watch her like a hawk and talk with small dog owners before letting her play with them. I find she also loves to play with whippets. I think a whippet would, generally, be a great playmate for her as they are insanely agile and playful and would tire her out wonderfully. My Border Collie isn't such a good playmate; she just wants to be left alone to "work" her tennis balls with me.

Good luck with your big n' li'l pair!

I think a lot of how we play as to do with our age.......as I'm getting a little older I am getting smarter....(so mom says)...
My sissy is a year and a half old and she has severe hip dysplasia...and she loves to play hard..and being a lab she's pretty strong....but I know that she has a problem and I try real hard not to hurt her......
Mom was worried when we first got her being a little 8 week old pup that I would really hurt her..cause you know how little pups always want to play....but I surprised mom...I knew she was a pup...and I played extra careful with her..........we ridgebacks are smart pups......

My Ridgeback does that too.. and I noticed a young Ridgey male at work does the same thing.. hmmm interesting.

Its probably too late to get Elsie into a Puppy Kindergarted type class but you may want to consider taking her to a dog park, or best bet would be to get her involved with other PUPPIES. Puppies have a much shorter tolerance for pain/play/out-of-controlness than adult dogs do. Being around other PUPPIES, or at least other dogs that maybe arent as playful may teach her what is appropriate play and when enough is enough.

While its good that Lime YELPS when Elsie is playing too hard... you may want to be careful in the future because Ridgebacks are high prey drive animals and a small animal (Chihuahua) who runs and makes high pitched squealing prey noises... well I think you get where Im going. I work at a dog boarding facility where prey drive while the dogs are playing with eachother is a REAL issue. Even if one dog injures itself and yelps out of pain- every other dogs runs up to it to at LEAST investigate.. maybe more.

You can create a "cue" word like "ENOUGH" or "TOO ROUGH" or something that when YOU see Elsie playing too hard with Lime, say your cue word and put her in a "time out" area for a minute. For puppies and young dogs, a minute or two is plenty of a time out since their memory of the event will diminsh after that. But anyway, you want to remove her as QUICKLY as you can when the incident occurs.

No offense but makes me wonder why you would get a Ridgeback (or vice versa) with such a small dog in the house already???
