Hi - We are fostering a Plott Hound/Ridgeback mix and we are thinking in keeping him. Can anyone tell me if Plott Hounds are very vocal?? We have a hound mix already and I am not sure if we are ready for another one. We are used to Rhodesian Ridgeback who generally only bark when really necessary and are also fairly lazy. Als0 - HOW much exercise do Plott's need? Our dogs are couch potatoes who live indoors. They get daily exercise off leash but I am wondering if it will be enough for this breed. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks

I've only had one Plott hound and he is not very vocal, unless he is outside and spots a small animal, then he goes nuts. I was worried about this same thing back when I was deciding whether to keep him.

As for exercise, Baxter gets three 20-40 min. walks a day, no less. He tires out very easily after 20 minutes of off-leash exercise.

Goodluck with your decision.

We see it's been a couple of months, did you decide to keep Elvis? Solomon is vocal if he's in his crate and wants to be out or outside and wants to be in and when he plays with Sandy. Or sees something that he can't have during our walk. He's stopped crying during his baths- I guess now that he's a "big boy" he's not supposed to cry anymorewink and he snores. and sings. other than that he can be pretty quiet. smile hehe. but we love him, and he usually gets quiet if he sees the water bottle when he and sandy are acting up. Or if he has a treat, especially if its a long lasting chew. (haha - can't find many of them the way he works on them!)

But the only good thing about the noise is that when he is quiet (and doesnt have a "treat") we know to check on him!

Oh and he loves his walks...although we're not too consistent about going. He hears the word and dances and carries on until I put his leash on him and can't wait to go. He's only 10 months, so he can walk for a while before he is completely pooped. Unfortunately for the rest of us tired pups his energy usually comes back after relaxing for a short bit!
