Hi, I was wondering if anyone feeds their Maltese "people food". A friend of mine bakes a small chicken breast, cuts it up and gives it to her dog. Is that OK for them? Or is it best not to even start that?

Ava does get some people food, like small bits of chicken or cheese or carrot, and she seems to be fine with it and her vet says a little bit is OK. You have to be careful though because it can make them picky about their real food, which is balanced for them in a way people food is not. So make sure your dog is still eating their regular meals. You also have to be very careful as there are many foods that are highly toxic, potentially even deadly, to dogs (e.g., chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions). There are also many foods that can just upset their GI systems (e.g., milk). With very small dogs, like Maltese, you also have to be careful about quantity.

Hope that helps!

My holistic vet says it's great for them. "People food" heavy in salts, sugar and preservatives is not. Fresh fruits and veggies in the food processor or cut up finely is great. Holly loves bananas, mango, avocado, strawberries, fresh blueberries (frozen will stain her face), apples (w/out the skin), eyes (cooked mostly yoke for the biotin w/ no salt or herbs added, yogurt is her fav (this is best in moderation 1-2x a week) the enzymes are great for dogs. You can also feed them boiled or baked chicken. I give Holly ground lamb (from Whole Foods) and freezed dried beef by Stella & Chewys. The kibble I mix in is called Great Life http://www.doctorsfinest.com/ (the website has a list of store by zip code)

Good Luck!!
