Hi, I was wondering if anyone feeds their Maltese "people food". A friend of mine bakes a small chicken breast, cuts it up and gives it to her dog. Is that OK for them? Or is it best not to even start that?

I guess efuryone needs to make their own decision, but our mom just feeds us dog kibble and sometimes gives us doggy treats but she doesn't feed us people food, cause our vet told her the best food for dogs is kibble..and some fur friends don't like to eat kibble once they eat people food so you can really do a diservice to your furpal by getting them addicted to foods that have no real nutritional value for them..shrugshrugChloe

Chloe is right, Willow, some furkids won't eat kibble after having people food. But Chicken is not bad for the kid. My vet has told me to feed mine that when they are sick and need food, because it is blan and they will almost always eat chicken. I have also been told rice. If the furkid will only eat the people food, it will need a varity to get all the nutrients it needs. There are some people who only feed thier furkids people food. Mine eat both. I sometimes mix some up in their kibble...but that was to get them to eat the kibble!
My Shelby (at Rainbow bridge) always ate her kibble plain...and then when we had dinner at night, I always had small parts of my meat or chicken cut up on the side of my plate for her. not a whole lot...but she knew this was her time to get people food. My vet would often tell me not to feed her people food (except when she was sick and I needed her to eat something....which was only once in her life that that happened)....but then he would turn around and tell me she was the healthiest Shih-Tzu he had ever seen...and she lived a very long and healthy life. So...go figure...you should or you shouldn't!
The main thing is to make sure they are still getting all the nutrients they need....and do research so you don't give them something that is bad for them. There is a web page that tells all the dangerous food for dogs, so if you want, pawmail me and I will send you the link.
My girls now get a turkey, rice, veggy mixture with their kibble...but only with their kibble....no scraps off the plate like Shelby did...but then...she was only one dog...I could never do that with 4...and it's a bad habit to do while eating anyway!!
hope that helps....

Hi Willow,

My mom sometimes cooks ground chicken meat, brown rice, canola oil & veggies and puts a spoonfull on my kibble. Her vet says to be careful though since mom isn't a doggie nutritionist.

Most doggies love chicken however my story is a bit different. My raindow Bridge frubling Sparky ID# 433362 went to the bridge on Sept 5th. He was really allegic to chicken. At age one he was scratching his little body so bad and humom excluded all his food. Little by little she introduced his diet back into his life to find he had a allergy to chicken. SO after weeks and weeks of scratching and lots of Bendryl humom found a great non allergic food from Natural Balance. He started eating there fish formula and never scratched again. Well our humom dad died and her big 50th birthday was a few weeks later. She was very depressed and all her close friends and family otld her to go away for her birthday. Well she did and left Sparky with my skin sister to care for us while mom ws away for 8 days. He just wouldn't eat. He missed mom and all the rest of the doggies were eating chicken so he was fed the chicken. Well he had such a bad reaction this time that he ended up at the vets weeks later. Almost 6 weeks after being given ythe chicken he was giving himself lots of leasions from scratching. Mom put a E COLLAR ON him and gavve him Bendryl and treated the leasions. The vet put him on steroids and an antobitic to clean up his skin from all the scratching. Three days into his tratment the scratching stopped. When Sparky finished his medications he was going through bad withdrawl form the steroids. All his bloods came back healthyy along with is urine tests. Sparky died one morning at only 5 years young. Humom swares it was the chicken...............I am not trying to tell you not to eat chicken as many of us do. Just make sure any foods don't cause scratching. Mom believes if she hadn't gone away Sparky would still be with us. Rest in peace my sweet brother.little angel
