I recently adopted Kimba, my American Pit Bull Terrier. I love this breed and hate their horrible reputation.
I'm looking to purchase a home soon, and as a first time home buyer, several people claim that I will be unable to obtain home insurance because of Kimba.
Not sure if this is true, and if it is, how are there so many people with fabulous pits and also own homes?
My friend just bought a home recently and owns a pit, but adopted him from a shelter and has boxer mix on his papers. thinking
Just trying to figure it out...

Thanks!

I believe there is a lot of information on this on the PBRC (pit bull rescue central) web page. (I'm not a homeowner, so that's the best I got!) confused

I also think I heard that some insurance companies will accept pit bulls if they are certified Canine Good Citizens. Don't know the details, but I hope this is a starting point for you! Good luck smile

I've heard a lot about this myself, but I had already bought my house when I got Tasha. My daughter also owns a pit bull and she told me the reason she had not registered her pit bull was for insurance reasons. I'm not really sure if there is a legal law that would keep you from getting house insurance just because of you owning a pit bull. I also heard that they can raise your insurance for owning one, so I am waiting to find out, because I am going to register Tasha in a couple of weeks.

Here are some links to help address these types of questions. I was buying a house about 8 years ago for the first time and there was a question on the online form about breeds of dogs I had. As soon as I checked pit bull they said I did not qualify. It is true what they say and I certainly hope that changes soon.

Our former insurance company dropped us when they saw our dogs (my husband dropped a tree on our house and they came by to inspect). No worries though, we found State Farm. They do not specify what breed you can have. Check with your local State Farm agent. They have been great for us. I refuse to do business with a company that bans our breed anyway.
