Sort of the nature vs. nurture issue. Does anyone have any good resources on how genetics affect personality, behavior or working ability in dogs?

Not a whole lot has been done as far as molecular genetics of canine behaviour is concerned.

There are a couple of papers attempting to connect coat color to aggressiveness.

One by Serpell and Podberscek published in Applied Animal Behaviour Science that I cannot seem to find at the moment.

Another:
Perez-Guisado, J., Munoz-Serrano, A. Lopez-Rodriguez, R. 2008. Evaluation of the Campbell test and the influence of age, sex, breed, and coat color on puppy behavioral responses. Can. J. Vet. Res. 72: 269-77.

Another recent one that attempted to draw breed connections to type and level of aggression.

Duffy, D. L., Hsu, Y., Serpell, J. A. 2008. Breed differences in canine aggression. Appl. Anim. Behav. Sci. doi:10.1016/j.applanim.2008.04.006

And another over-viewing the potential for mapping behavioural genes.

Spady, T. C., Ostrander, E. A. 2008. Canine behavioral genetics: pointing out the phenotypes and herding up the genes. Am J. Hum. Genet. 82: 10-18.

A book you may find interesting:

Ostrander, E. A., Giger, U., Lindblad-Toh, K. 2006. The Dog and Its Genome. CSHL Press. Cold Spring Harbor, NY.

It can be purchased online from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press.

Gio,

In the past we have heard people say that black and tan dogs are always something to look out for, or to avoid owning a black dog with tan points. Is this just an off the wall stereotype or is the paper you mentioned talking about the same thing?

As far as I know, there has been no actual research into black and tan dogs and temperament. If I had to guess, I would probably say that it is just a stereotype based on the "evil and dangerous" views of Rotties and Dobermans.

Yeah..that's what I thought. It's too bad there are more friendly black and tan dogs than there are not I believe!
