Anyone have some Shiba puppy advice for me? I'm getting my little girl Shiba at the end of August and can't wait to bring her home. I figured for Hershey's sake I'd take him with me when I pick up the puppy from the breeder so he can see that she's coming with us, instead of just showing up at home with her. I dogsit a lot of dogs for friends so we have new pals and old pals in and out of our house. Hershey doesn't mind but right now I have a 14 week old Beagle here and he's not too sure he likes this Beagle. They get along just fine, they have their moments, but it's usually over food.

Anyway, enough about that. How much do you feed your puppies? Any advice on getting her kennel trained. She'll be 7-8 weeks old when I get her home. Advice on potty training? I'd love to hear everyone's ideas.

I remember we had a tough time training Hershey when we got him at 3 1/2 months old. Being that he was older I think it was harder on him since he'd been an outdoor dog before he came to live with us.

Any suggestions would be great!
Thanks!

My best advice would be to try and establish a schedule for potty training as early as possible and stick with it. The puppy will like the predicitability and do it's best to go to the bathroom outside. Shibas tend to be very clean. Do not try to rub a puppy's nose in her mess if she does make a mistake. Dogs do not associate the mess with them actually making the mess and will just encourage them to try and find a place to hide and go to the bathroom. Patience is the key! Finally, I would suggest restricting the puppy's access to the house to only places where you can pay full attention to the puppy. Otherwise keep the puppy in his crate. Crates are meant to be safe places for dogs to be able to relax and enjoy their own personal space. Therefore avoid using the crate as a punishment. Best of Luck!
