My Mom has been owned by standard poodles for 40 years. When she had the horse farm they traveled with her to one day and away shows. Most shows dogs were required to be leashed but hers were showed in OB and everyone knew them to be well behaved so they didn't need the leash! At h0me no one Ever broke into our tackroom to steal frown
Mom always had a thing about the poodle crosses. She would say if you want a poodle buy a poodle. She bred and showed conformation Cairn terriers and TB horses for jumping and always carefully researched bloodlines and faults.
The new trend in"designer dogs" many with a poodle background troubles her. She doesn't think enough research in the bloodlines, and soundnesss is done before these people breed. Plus how true to type are these crossbreds? What about eyes, hips, bloat? Are these people just going for the money? What do the rest of you think about this trend.

I agree with your mom! It's sad to think of all the heartbreak when some of these designer dogs turn out to be shedders (for the family who wanted a hypoallergenic dog) or have other health and/or behaviour issues because of careless breeding.

Although I have to say a part of me is glad that standard poodles are a "well-kept secret" - I would HATE to see the breed being churned out by unscrupulous people to cash in on a trend, like dalmatians (101 Dalmatians) or JRT's (Frasier), etc.

Mom just met someone this week who has a Goldendoodle. And while she loves it she is disappointed that yep.. it does shed!cry The people who breed these crosses have no understanding of genetics. They are only in it for the money!

Same thing here. I have a friend that just got a Labradoodle. Same for her...it sheds. She is so disappointed. It was sold to her as a non-shedding dog and she paid A LOT of money for that dog.

At my local humane society there are Labradoodles and Goldendoodles who were abandoned because they didn't get the poodle coat. Fortunately they get adoped by families who know up front about the shedding and don't mind.

I don't know. I have a purebred standard and a mutt. I love them both to death, but I was always taught that if it's a mixed breed, it's simply a mix. No way to come up with a standard for the dog, and a cute and fancy name doesn't make it any less of a mix.

My sister has a "cockapoo", he got the poodle coat and the spaniel disposition, so she got lucky. But she didn't buy him as a designer mixed breed. He was adopted at the pound and labelled as a mix.

I agree that those who sell mixed breeds for big bucks are usually only in it for money. True breeders want to continue to advance the breed and breed to standards, something that mixed dog breeders are unable to do.

In my never humble opinion breeding living creatures is a serious business and breeders should be licensed. I think that mandatory licensing would have a nice domino effect... Like, they'd have to pass a test every few yrs to show that they know what they are doing. And they'd have to register their litters and pay a breeding fee... And an inspector would pay them a surprise visit every year they plan to breed and see how many other dogs are there and what the living conditions are like... And the doggie mom and dad of the puppies should get a health and disposition clearance from a vet that's appointed by the Breeders Agency to avoid corruption. That way the puppy mills and greedy half-wits who call themselves "breeders" would go away... And there would be less puppies born and they would have better chance for happy and healthy lives. And the good people who breed beautiful, healthy and smart dogs for all the right reasons would have to charge a little more for the puppies. That would then hopefully make the fools who want a dog just as a fashion accessory or are not prepared for the cost and commitment and would otherwise "get rid of it" when s/he becomes a nuisance, think twice about it and get themselves a gold fish instead... (Not to mention that this would create jobs!)

Ok. so heres my opinion and stuff for all it's worth.. when you mix breed to get designer dogs,.. you don't actually get the genetic best qualities of each breed.. but the worst.. Ummmmmm Like fur example.. You get a labredoodle and you think it won't shed like a poodle.. then guess what.. you get a shedder... It is a genetic fact... I mean I know accidents happen and cross breeds happpen and stuff.. but breedig designer dogs to make money because they are sweet and cute ands stuff.. is WAY weong.. and there is no a single reputible breeder that would even go there.... BTW.. I happen to own a mutt straight from the shelter. actually 2. but Lakota lived almost 20 years.. All I am saying.. is buyer beware..
