 | | | | This Class is for WINDOWS users only.. I dont know anything about a MAC
This class is to teach you the basic info on using GIMP.. As most of you know the Artistic Expressions group is the one that introduced us all to GIMP. But its not really easy to understand how to use GIMP.. You will probably learn that I probably do things with GIMP differently then the admins/members of AE I dunno as I taught myself how to use GIMP.. I personally LOVE that group and hope Im not stepping on any toes by holding Classes here in PS.. I just think that its easier to learn something if the "directions" are more detailed and clear. I taught myself everything I know on GIMP. Just because when I downloaded GIMP I couldnt understand what the instructions where talking about. They might have changed it up a bit now but I know some still have problems understanding GIMP.
First things First
In order to make a photo using GIMP you have to download GIMP.. Its FREE so no worries on that..
Gimp for Windows. Free download
Download Gimp
Okay, so does everyone have GIMP downloaded?? If you need any help downloading GIMP please visit the Artistic Expressions group. Thats what their admins are for I will help if I can when it comes to downloading gimp...
The first photo we are going to make is a simple photo.. Just your basic cut and paste.. First go to Google.com then click Images. type in the background you want..such as Beach or Ocean whatever youd like. Then click search images or hit enter on your keyboard..
Once you do that Images should come up on the site..Click on the one you want it will then take you to another site but at the top of that site should be a white bar with the picture on it, click the picture again and it will bring it up bigger, right click on the picture and either save it or copy it.
Okay so now you have your background copied and gimp open..right?
First go to gimp's tool bar and click on FILE its up at the top next to edit.. then click on NEW..once you click on new a little box will pop up it should look like this:
Create New Image Box
Now with the Create New Image Box (Picture above)
Change the width number to 400 and the height number to 400 so it will be a 400X400 picture.. Thats usually what I use but sometimes I change it up depending on what kind of picture I am making but for this picture we will do a 400X400
Then see where it says "Advanced Options" ? click on Advanced Options. Once you do that you will see more stuff open under the words "Advanced Options it will then look like this:
Create New Image Box 2
(Yours wont be alittle blurry.. I just did it fast and so yeah..)
Then you need to click on the box next to "fill with" right now it should say Background Color.. We want to change it to "Transparency" then click ok..
then you will see this:
Transparency Page
Now go to the gimp toolbar and click on the took that looks like this:
Resizing Tool
Click on the resizing tool and then click on the Trancparency Page then RIGHT click on the transparency page and click PASTE..
On the Transparency Page you will RIGHT click with your mouse go to PASTE and paste your background Image.. If it doesnt work then you will need to go back to google and copy your image again. OR if you SAVED your background then you will need to go to FILE then OPEN on the gimp tool bar then open your background image RIGHT click on the picture and click on COPY..
Once you have your background image copied you will need to paste it
it should then look like this:
Resizing Page
Then click SCALE and your picture should be sized 400X400..
Now for the FUN part! Making a CUT OUT
First step is to fine the picture of you (or whoever) that you think will best suit the photo you are making. Right click on the picture if it is on your dogster page and COPY it. If you have the picture saved then go into FILE and open the picture.. right click on the picture once it opens and COPY it.
Now go to the GIMP tool bar and click on FILE.. New.. and do the same thing you did on the background to open a transparency page.
Once you have opened the transparency page RIGHT click on it and paste your picture. It will then look like this:
Cut Out Part 1
Now you will need to go to the Gimp toolbar and click on the tool that looks like a Lasso or a Rope. The tool that looks like this:
Cutting tool
Now with that tool click and HOLD with the mouse to out line the part you want to use.. In the case of the picture I am making I need to out line my sister madison's body. Like this:
Cut out
Once you have your cut out, outlined you will need to RIGHT click on the cut out and click COPY. Then go to the GIMP tool bar and open another new transparency page. On the new transparency page right click and paste your cut out.
Now if you didn't get it outlined perfectly DONT worry! You can use the eraser tool to erase the parts you dont want in your cut out!
That tool looks like this:
Eraser Tool
Now once you paste your cut out on the new transpareny page it should be outlines with the little dotted lines and a square box. If it is not then use the BOX tool which looks like this:
Squaring tool
Using the Squaring tool (also known as the BOX tool) just make a square around your cut out.. it will look like this:
Cut Out Part 4
Then be sure to SAVE your cut out.. Now is that time! Where the cut out is go to FILE (NOT on the gimp tool bar but on the page your cut out is) and save picture as.. SAVE FILE AS A .GIF so that you can reuse your cut out on other photos.
Once your cut out is saved RIGHT click on your cut out and COPY it. Then paste it on your background photo.
Resize it if you need to, to get the cut out right where you want it. Then just click with the mouse on the background so it will put your cut out in place.. Go to file and save your picture (Like you did your cut out) but save this picture as a .jpg file so that you can upload it to your dogster page.
To save files as a .GIF or .JPG files just type in the file name you want to save your picture as such as Madisonsbeachpic and then add .jpg to it without spaces. OR madisoncutout and then .gif they will look like this: madisonsbeachpic.jpg AND madisoncutout.gif
Any questions??? Just ask me!
Remember this step is only if your image didnt already have the box and dotted lines when you pasted your cut out on the new transparency page..
I will be posting Class dates and times as soon as I know them.. | | | | |
