My mommy and daddy need a little help. They are trying to teach us how to swim, are there any hints they should try to get us to want to be in the water? Right now we don't like it one bit. Daddy heated the pool so the water isn't cold, they have a little island in the shallow end and have tried to play with us while our feet still touch the ground. As soon as they let go of us, we jump right out. They don't force us to get back in. They tried rewarding us when we stay in the pool, but we aren't interested in that either. This has happened now on three different days.

Any suggestions?

We get our weims out in the water by throwing floatable water decoy toys...try throwing them a little farther each time before you know it your dogs will be swimming to the deep end and back. We don't have a pool we take our dogs down to the river (which they love) and we also have a baby pool set up in the backyard during the summer monthsbig grin

My mom and dad went out in the water and called me. I cried a little but I wanted to be with them so I swam out to them. They cant keep me out of the water now.

It took me awhile to "warm up" to the water, too. In fact, I still don't really like the pool (maybe because I am nervous about being able to get out?). I love the lake, but it took a good 2-3 months of persistence to get to that point. My people brought toys to the beach, and finally I decided to swim when they tossed my favorite one into the drink.

I don't like the water much either, even though I know I am supposed to. I follow my brother into the ocean but when I realize I'm in the water I run out and stand behind my Mommy or Daddy. I don't like playing in our own pool either. My Mommy even gets me my very own kiddy pool every summer and I just don't want to play in it, maybe get in and check it out and then right back out. I know my brother doesn't like being in water where he can't touch the bottom. I say it's okay to be different, the water isn't for everyone. I don't feel I am missing anything.... maybe you'll want to check it out one day.

What you're doing is great! That's what my Dad did, and now, I'm a water freak. I used to hate water! But now, I just can't stay out!laugh out loud Don't worry, with a little persistance and patience, you'll love the water like all weims should.

I did not like to swim at first either! My mom talked to a nice fellow who had his own 2 dogs that LOVED swimming - we hung out with those guys and I saw how much fun those 2 dogs were having and I couldn't stand it - I HAD to be out there like the other dogs!!

The rest is history - Mom got me a cool Kong water toy that I wanted to rip to bits, but I had to go out into the water to get it. Mom threw it a little farther every time - She can't throw it far enough for me now!

Now I love to swim so much I could do it all day, and I can swim really far too, even if the water gets deep!
