Oh, dear ... yes, we have indeed had this problem, except it was birds - adult or babies. The Iggies are true hunting dogs and the prey instinct is strong.

This year "mom" tried removing the beginnings of nests every time she noticed one starting. One pair of robins was determined, building the nest back faster and faster until complete nests were re-appearing within 24 hours. Egads. So ... Mom & Dad actually fenced in a smaller portion of the yard next to our deck (we have a huge yard) and us "darlings" are supervised for our potty outings. We go into the bigger yard together for ball & frisbee throwing/chasing. The baby robins are away from "Mom's" mini-killers and we have hope this year that "mom" won't come home from work to find mangled birds on the back deck or in the house. It's just how they are - even the smallest (Maddie) and gentlest (Aten). frown Ciano (that would be ME) only chases balls and frisbees. wink

Once upon a time "Mom" had a Borzoi - so sweet, loving, gentle - a couch potato of the first water. She talks about seeing her go from sleeping on the deck to leaping full tilt into the air and catching a bird flying over the deck. And the squirrels just disappeared. Or rather only bits and pieces were to be found. Ugh, ugh. "Mom" say, "Our lovely Borzoi, like our tiny I.G.'s, became a "house dog" and went out under close supervision."

Sorry ... if you come up with another solution, we're interested!

Does Fellini do this when you're standing there in the yard with him? Our Aten goes for the grackels (sp?) but Mom keeps an eye out and is quick to make him stop. Um, well ... the screaming got his attention, goofy dog.

I don't know anything other than to supervise during the times outside and be alert for an unsuspecting squirrel or bird coming into the yard and take immediate steps to shoo them away or thwart the hunting of the dog. They're so amazingly quick that constant alertness is needed to be a half step ahead of their noticing something to go for.

Ciano shows absolutely no interest in hunting ... he only barks. The two little ones, however, are a totally different story. They are predators that I have to watch. Besides the pain and suffering we want to avoid for the birds and the squirrels, we're afraid one of the dogs will get bitten or pecked while engaged in this behavior OR catch a disease from one of the victims.

IG Kestrel isn't a hunter but will play with dead things. I just accept that my Whippets will kill things. The squirrels have figured out how high they can jump and how fast they can go so not many are killed now.

Hi, I too am a little hunter. I brought mommy and daddy a little squirrel that I had caught while they were in the house. They weren't very pleased with my present though. I am always on the alert for moles too and have brought a couple of them into the house. I lost one in the couch and mom found it for me when she was cleaning under it. I was sooo happy cause I thought it was gone for good. She wouldn't let me have it though. I also help my brother Jeffrey catch and kill groundhogs. Together we're a team to be reackoned with.applause Only shows that iggys are sighthounds just like the big greys.hamster dance Harriet
