Hi Everyone,

I am glad to have found a group page for the French Bulldogs.

Jack is 4 1/2 months old now. We adopted Jack 1 week ago.

Do any of you have swimming pools? I was talking to this french bulldog breeder and she said that she had lost one of her frenchies to drowning and that she now teaches them that they can't swim so they stay away from the pool.

Does anyone have a frenchie that can swim?

I have a swimming pool, so that is why I was hoping for some feedback.

Thanks, Jacks mom

Many Frenchies can swim, it depends on their body type, unfortunately quite a few are sinkers and all of them no matter how adept at dog paddling have little stamina.
Please keep your pool fenced or get a sensor alarm system for your pool, not just for your Frenchie's sake but for your own protection from accidents. Pools are magnets for pets and small children who can slip in and be unable to get out without anyone noticing. My Frenchies can swim (we have a boat) but they can't dog paddle for long- they have front heavy bodies and short legs and tire easily not to mention they cannot get out of a pool from the step without help. My Frenchies are always supervised when we are near water and wear life vests if they will be anywhere with deep water (i.e. on the boat) I don't want to scare you but I have received far too many tearful phone calls and emails from dog owner friends about losing their pet when it could have been prevented by a fence or alarm. Just last month a rescue dog from FBRN was missing and the owners discovered he had escaped to the neighbor's yard and was found dead in the pool. http://fbrnetworknews.blogspot.com/2008/04/too-soon.html
Better to be safe than sorry.

My frenchie swims, as does my english bulldog! I heard about bulldogs drowning so I made sure both of mine learned how to swim so they could tread water if they fell into a pool, river, lake etc. My bulldog loves to swim and fetch sticks thrown into the river. My husband and I got them both swim vests also, which helps them float higher in the water. With short snouts they need any inch above water they can get. Both like their vests and like to go to doggie swim events at the end of the summer. Picasso was even pictured on the Hinckley Ledge pool doggie swim events webpage.

I'm a frenchie and I swim. We have a pool and one of my pack members is a vet tech and wanted to make sure I knew how to find the steps and exit the pool just in case of an accidental fall. I needed some practice, but now swim for the stairs with no problem. When I fall in, I do kinda' sink, it is that dense muscular body I have!
