So, Pip and I have been partners in crime for almost 6 months now- during a record setting winter which has yet to end (there's snow on the forecast tonight and it's mid April). However, it gets pretty hot here in the summer, not uncommon to be in the 80's and 90's a lot of the time. Do people shave their schips or how do you keep them from overheating? I read something about shaving them being discouraged but now I can't seem to find where I read that.

I wish I could help you. I live where it's cool in the summer. 75 max. I've never seen a shaven Schipperke. Wouldn't do no harm I guess.thinking

I lived in the CA central valley where it normally was between 95 and 105 daily all summer. I now live in TX and we have the heat also. I never shave my Schip ( or 3 others Ive owned) because the fur helps insulate them strangely enough. Chino lays all day on a tile floor or oustside in the shade. I have a Kool Pad ( blue gel water filled pad you can buy on-line) that he lays on, and I frequently spray him down with a spray bottle. He hates the pool!

Well, it's almost fall now, by the time I found this forum.....but I am a groomer (and love Schipperkes), and would strongly advise against shaving down your Schip!!!!

Their coats insulate from heat as well as cold, and if you shave them repeatedly, it will "confuse" the skin and cause them to grow more thick wooly undercoat, instead of the proper balance of undercoat and the outer guard hairs. When they get to that point, you almost HAVE to keep them shaved down, because that thick wooly undercoat is impossible to brush out, and is WAY too hot for the dog.

I see this ALL THE TIME in Poms, Chows, etc. that people bring to me to shave down repeatedly.....I try to talk them out of it, but in the end, it's their dog, and they're going to get it shaved, whether I do it or someone else does. shrug

I live in buffalo and it gets to about high 80s on somedays. But i never shave Foxy. Schipperkes shed 2 times a year once before winter and once before summer. So they shed off that warm coat so they can have a coolier coat for summer.
