My Nutmeg is only 9 wks, but we'd like to have her track. My husband and I bow hunt so we'd love to take her and have her involved by tracking deer. She's already pointing and stalking prey animals, her family and toys, but she won't get an opportunity to do so in the field. Does anyone use their vizsla in tracking and what adive on training her specifically for deer?

We just started tracking class with our 9 year old vizsla, Tucker. We've had two classes so far. OUr instructor says any dog can learn to track, even a puppy. She recommends the book, "The Audible Nose" which she says is written for newfies, but she thinks it's one of the best tracking books available. She also recommends some tapes called "Tracking" by Joanne Plumb Fleming. I haven't bought any of the books/tapes, but if you don't have access to a trainer, it's something you could look into.

Once your dog understands the concept of tracking, it is my understanding that it's not really too difficult to transfer that learning to search for whatever scent you present your dog. Initially she teaches dogs to track for their owner's scent..
