When I take Izzie for her walks, if we try to run it doesn't turn out well. At first she will run ahead of me, which is fine, but then she will remember that I'm back there and come to herd me. She runs back and forth behind me, which I can deal with, but the main problem is that she jumps to bite the leash or jumps to bite at my clothes. I've noticed that she likes to carry her leash in her mouth sometimes. Any suggestions on how I can stop this behavior? I understand that she will probably always run back and forth behind me (herd me, I guess), but the jumping & biting needs to stop. As of right now, we don't have a fenced yard, so she doesn't get to run that often. That is why I want her to run with me. Thanks!

Have you tried doing something to take the edge off her energy like throwing a ball for her for a bit before starting your run? Kai was very bad about nipping at my feet and trying to herd me, but it was usually when she had gotten herself too wound up. While running, I always leave a little extra slack in the lead so that she can grab on to it and feel like she is leading herself. It seems to make her feel better and she will settle into the pace of the run quicker to have it in her mouth. When she does try to nip, which is rarely now, I'll stop and make her run through some commands like sit, down, etc. to get her centered again. Hope this helps. Good luck!!!

well, at only 4mo old your "heel" command is still being developed (i'm assuming). it just sounds like Izzie's getting excited with your energy... which is a good thing!, but she needs to learn that the same rules apply whether you're in a walk, run, skip, etc.

maybe try stopping with a "sit!" or going back to a walk when she starts to herd and/or nip. yeah, ya might not get your usual run in for a while, but we Aussie's pick things up so fast it won't be long before she gets the picture.

good luck! way to go
