I feed my Border Collie every evening and he never eats it all. He is thin, never seems to have an ounce of fat on his body and you can always feel his back bone and ribs. He eats when he wants to and never has an empty bowl for long. He does not get a lot of exercise and he is always ready to go anywhere with me. Is it normal for a Border Collie to eat in such a way? Most of his family are stocky and end up over-weight dogs but he is nothing to what they are. Is it possible that he eats only when he gets exercise that he knows will zap his energy? Or rather he eats when he knows he needs it? I have never had a dog that was weight conscious like this one!!! LOL!! Who else has a similar situation?

Well Sam was thin when we got him.Tooo thin. So we started feeding him about the same amount of as my HUDGE wemaraner! Bad idea. Sam never would finish his meal in the morning or at night. Jack always does becuase he needs to eat alot. At first we were nervous...but ehen we took him to the vet....she said he was fat! He had a big butt! Borders are only sappossed to weigh about 55- 60 pounds. Sam is a mix but has most of border characteristics.....he is naturally alittle larger. But he weighs 71 pounds! i would not worry about it tooooo much.

I have always worried about Josie not eating enough as well. She weighs 50lbs...and considering she is a mix with lab (which have weight gain issues), but she is healthy. Border Collies are a working breed and if the dont get enough exercise they get a bit depressed or lathargic. Nothing really to worry about, but they do make it difficult when you have scheduled feedings. Maybe try a food with a higher calorie count if you feel that your dog is too thin. I think I fed josie puppy food for at least the first year.
