Hello. I have a question about raw diets for puppies. My old dog was on a BARF-style diet, but I adopted her when she was 3 years old and about 50 lbs so I never had any worries about feeding her raw bones. I am bringing home a new puppy next month and I will be feeding her a raw diet as well, but I am nervous about feeding raw bones to such a small puppy. I was thinking of grinding the meat until she gets a bit bigger, but I have heard that that can be even more dangerous than feeding the whole raw meaty bones. I am also thinking about supplementing with bonemeal and leaving the raw bones for later, but I do not know if that is necessary. Has anyone raised a puppy on a raw diet and, if so, how did they handle it? Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks!
Emi is a 4 month old shiba inu, she has been eating raw since we brought her home at 8 weeks old, we did start with some homemade ground raw meals...just to see how she would take to the idea of raw meat, well that was inhaled quickly. After we finished up what we ground (maybe a week later) we offered chicken necks, wings and thighs, there were a few times she swallowed WAY to big of a peice choked and threw it up instantly...it was a bit scary not going to lie, but I knew she would be fine, and needed to learn how to take her time, its just as common for an inhaler to choke on kibble. She now eats a variety of meats and cuts, but I still stick to chicken, turkey, duck, cornish hen etc bones for actually consuming and only let her nibble on beef and pork bone, she is loosing alot of teeth right now and has her adults coming in quickly so I am sure she will be managing those other bones soon enough. We also feed whole fish, she is still a little unsure on fish

Thanks for the reply! Her breeder weans the puppies onto a raw diet and she will be introduced to chicken necks by the time I pick her up on friday, so that eases my nerves a bit. Good to hear from others who have done it successfully!
Dusti started off at 8 weeks old on small chicken cornish hens, she would eat everything except the thickest part in the middle of the back over about 2 days time. The small rib & wing bones were perfect! Full size chicken wings are also pretty thin & easy to crush. Chewing is very important for puppies. I would never feed without bones for long because of all the minerals that are in them!
Cornish hens are pretty expensive so I was glad when she graduated up to full size chicken bones
