My pup is usually on schedule pooping right after each meal (2x a day). Lately though its taking longer--last night it was 5 hours after dinner-- is that what I should expect as he gets older? And when (if ever) do I feed him ONCE a day?

Hi, I've never time my pup katie when she goes to the toilet. But as they get older they do tend to hold themselves longer.
Katie is six months now and I feed her twice a day, morning and late afternoon. My other two Cavaliers also are on two meals a day, I was told this is better then just once a day.

Barkley is at the same stage you speak of. He takes longer and less frequently. My vet said this is normal. She also said that once he is a year ol dI can try weaning him to once a day, but its really better to feed him two smaller meals a day. FYI

Nell is 19 months and is still very quick about going. I think it does depend on the dog. They do slow down usually as they get older. It is recommended that you never feed only once a day! It makes it much harder on the pup's stomach and is not a natural thing for the canine world. Keeps them much happier if they eat twice a day also as their tummies never seem to get over full by gulping because they are hungry.

It depends on your dog, some go a lot and others don't. I feed my dogs twice a day (morning & night), again that depends on your dog. My China go's boo boo in the morning and again just before we go to bed at night (9:00pm). My other sweety go's like crazy all day long. Now I don't mean that she constantly pooping but, she has to drop a load every single time we all go outside. So, like I said before, it depends on the dog. Your little one sounds normal to me.blue dog
