Does Herding Dog + Cats have to = Lots of Chasing?

I already posted this in one of the regular forums, but wanted to throw the question out to this specific group of "herders":

Has anyone added a cat or two to your family and had some trouble with your dog chasing or cornering them?

Baelin gets along with our cats about 80% of the time. The other 20% involves him playfully "going after" them. It's usually when my husband and I are home from work in the evenings and we are all active and co-mingling in the same space.

He doesn't do it agressively. He's never tried to hurt them. He has a "play" body language & tail position. But, he gets way to close, way to fast, and freaks them out. Then they run, and then he chases. Or, they'll just walk by and then he'll jump up and chase them.

He doesn't back down when the cats hiss and swat. It's almost like he interprets is as them trying to play back with him. I'm getting tired of calling him off and giving him time-outs.

Anyone else have dealt with this before, and how did you stop it?

Perhaps I am not the best one to respond to this, my dog learned early on to respect the cats... or else! She is a fast learner and very responsive to scolding (usually consisting of me firmly saying "NO") so if she is too rough with a cat who doesn't want to partake of the rough play, I scold her and call her off that cat. That being said, She has a kitten of her own who is rough right back. He is a trouble maker so I have actually encouraged Rowena to get him under control when he is doing certain behaviors. They play well together, but the cat is a bit too rough sometimes! Other than that, they are best buddies! Check out the photos!kittykittysnoopy

Yup, I did the same with Pip when he was a youngster. When he went for my baby girl(aka catparty) he suddenly found himself on his back hearing a deep NO. He wasn't hurt but it was an instant pairing with the stimulus(the cat running), his behaviour and the response. I never had to mention it again and now he and Lucy are wonderful friends who kiss each other regularly. She only likes to go outside with him actually cos she feels safer with him theresmile He will also quickly accept other cats as part of the pack now. I just have to say "off" if he's moving up too fast the first time and then reward his gentle effeorts to get close that are cat-friendlysmile cloud 9

Phantom had one problem with a cat when she was a puppy. His name was Nightmare and she attacked him. We think she was just playing, but the kitten was hurt. We thought he would die and so did the vet. The vet left him in his cage overnight to see how he was in the morning and the next day Nightmare was up and running and jumping all over his cage. We were all very surprised.

Phantom got scolded big time and has never since hurt another cat. She is four now and has never even offered to chase one. She lays in my floor now while the cats groom her. Sometimes she nudges them with her nose, but that's about it.
