So, I'm wondering why some Aussies have prick/triangle ears and others, like mine, have floppy ears. Is this genetic, or perhaps the dog's personal choice, or laziness, or maybe there was something in the ear leather that's not as strong as with the pricks?

Her mom has floppy, her dad has pricks, and the siblings are mixed with some prick and some flop. She had pricks when she was happy or excited up until about a year old, now when she's happy or excited she they just go up a bit to the side not forward. She's got greyhound ears. LOL

I'm just curious about this and whether there is a reason for it, or it's just individuality.

The breed standard calls for a ear that is neither hound (where they lay over close to the face and low) or pricked (straight up) the standard is that the tips only roll down. It is inherited. There are many miniature aussies that are not aussies at all they are shetland sheepdogs, pomeranian and other mixes. If you look at these breeds and then look at the pictures on this site you can see the similarities. Visit MASCA for more information. Another good site to visit to see quality pups that are showing he standard is www.tinasminiaussies.com This is where Kate came from. Our vet was impressed with Kate and could not belive how much she represented the larger Aussie look. Cute Aussie!
