I don't have one yet that I would like to show, but I think it sounds like something that might be fun and we are looking into getting a new dog soon!

Do you have an Idea of what breed you want to show?

The first step in getting involved into the world of Showing Purebred Dogs is research. You should study the breed standard of the breed you wish to show.

The second step is even more research. You need to research breeders and pedigrees. (the best way is to go through a breed club)

When you are ready to purchase your pup, contact the breeder you chose and become acquainted. You may also consider going to shows and visiting the breeders that usually hover around the breed rings.

Once you have purchased your pup, you need to train and socialize (this usually starts at 12 weeks). There is show training that one must learn. You personally, need to find a local Kennel Club and enroll in handling classes. These will help train you and train your dog. Your pup needs to know how to gait, stack, and show personality in the ring. Alot of personality and gaiting relies on the handler.

Depending on the coat type and breed, you need to know how to groom your dog. A local kennel club should be able to help you with this.

Now, while a pup cannot show until 6 months of age, there are Sanction matches which can also provide judge insight and can halp predicthow your dog may do in the ring.

Also depending on the breed, Your dog may not reach physical maturity until 5 years of age! Small breed dogs mature faster than large breed dogs.

There is so much I have left out, only because it can get very confusing. I hope this helps!

I kinda lucked into it.. my mom had an equestrian accident that broke her knee (OWWWW).. so her best friend and my dog's mom had a bitch about to deliver.... and they GAVE mom one of the pups.. As it turned out.. I ended up being the pick of the litter.. and out of my 6 brothers and sisters I was the only show quality one in the batch... Anyway.. that is a little of my history.. but about your question.. Are you thinking of handling your dog yourself?? I have a handler (points to mom's knee issue) The best bit of advice I can give you is read EVERYTHING you can 1. about the breed you pick.. go to the AKC site and check out your breeds standards.. but here is even better advice.. Hook up with a breeder/handler of your specific breed and let them mentor you.. MOST people are very friendly and are very willing to help you out... Just telll em yer a newbie and they are gonna be happy to help... The one book I have that is most helpful in regards to showing.. is called" The Simple Guide to Showing Your Dog.. by Richard Beauchamp.. TONS or really helpful info.. including tips on how to win.. Worked for me.. One more little thing. which I didn't do.. I started going to AKC events.. they are REALLY REALLY stressful.. Try to find an international event in your area.. WAY WAY more relaxed atmosphere.. and the real up tight AKC people tend not to go to those... But you will be judged correctly.. get a written critique on your dog.. and you will also be getting judged by some AKC judges too... Good way to kinda introduce yourself into the game without getting so freaked out at a BIG show. Please feel free to ask if I can help you more...
