Week 5: Friday we had a follow up exam at the physical therapist. She was amazed at how well he was doing. Most of his hair has grown back (no more naked butt!!) and his range of motion/movement is excellent. We may start some under water treadmill work later this week. I am checking with the surgeon to get his opinion. "technically" he did not want any activity until his 8 week x-ray which is Feb. 13th. I would love to get him on the treadmill since he is going stir crazy; but I don't want to set him back. We'll see what he says. It's only 2 more weeks. We've come this far so if we need to wait, we'll wait. He will need quite a bit of strength building. His right leg is significantly weaker, and smaller looking then his left.
I can't believe we are in week 6, all in all this has been relatively easy. Thanks for everyone's good thoughts and prayers.

After talking with the surgeon, he has read over the PT's notes, and has given us clearance to start under water treadmill work prior to his 8 week check up. We had our first session last Thursday. He did not mind being in the enclosed treadmill, as it filled with 25 inches of water around him! He went for about a minute and a half before we gave him a break. Which doesn't sound like much, but he was definetly fatigued. He went for about another 2-3 minutes and figured in that short time figured out how to cheat smile Since his legs are so long, he can strattle the belt by standing on the edges, so he had to be guided back into the middle making him actually work. Dr. Shaw didn't leave him in for very long after that, she saw he was getting tired and did not want him to over use his right leg. She also noted that the first time they are on this, it is more mentally draining then physical, since they are getting use to the entire experience. We have sessions scheduled once a week for the next 5 weeks. I am hoping that after our Feb. 13th x-ray we can also start to go for walks outside. We'll talk to ya later.

8 weeks have come and are on the way out!! We have thankfully had our x-ray and the bone has healed nicely. We are now in the second 8 week phase. We have been cleared for 10 min walks cheer
Every 2 weeks we get to add 5 min. During this time, still no running jumping, or being off the leash; but we get to see more than the backyard!! Yeah applause After we reach the end of this 8 week period, we will be able to resume all activities just in time for the nice weather.
We have a couple more treadmill sessions, and although it has helped tremendously, it's kinda expensive. We may get one more package, but that will be it. Just have to do it the old fashioned way and go for walks outside!!!

Well, it's been kinda quiet from our neck of the woods. We unfortunetly can no longer come to daycare, or go to the park cry cry Because Zeus could potentially have this happen to his left leg, we are proceeding with extreme caution. At this time another surgery means another $6K. Not that the first one was in the budget, the second is out of the question. I have been talking with the PT to come up with ways to have him interact with friends but in a very controlled manner. We have come up with meeting friends for walks, and giving about 10min. free play. Walking in new places so he gets some new sights, smells, and sounds is also a way to keep him mentally stimulated. So if anyone would like to meet us let me know. We can come to you!! As the summer progresses I may break down and bring him to the park, I just don't want to take the chance. My hope is that by next year I will have the other knee done, so we never have to worry about it. He just turned 3 a couple weeks ago, so he's still very young, and will do as well the second time as he has with this one.

Geez, this sure shows how long it has been since I have visited the group! I am sorry to hear about zeus but hopefully after next year things will be closer to normal for you guys! We would love to meet up for a walk sometime! We just moved and have been neglecting the dog park much more that I would have liked. I can't wait for the new Dakota Memorial Park to have its grand opening! FUN FUN
