Friday December 7th Zeus is going in for surgery cry . We tried going the therapy route, but after weighing the cost of therapy which would essentially only be a band aid for the problem, we decided to opt for surgery. This is a HUGE investment. And I'm not talking just $$ (although $4k is not chicken feed) the first 2 months he is to be kept relatively quiet. On a leash while he is "out with the family" As long as he is laying quietly he does not need to be seperated from everyone. On a leash for bathroon trips, no messing around do your business and back in the house! The good thing is he does not need to be in a crate, while we are
not home, but instead he can be in a bathroon, or bedroom if it doesn't have a bed for him to jump onto, it does have to have a "door" and not just a baby gate it is OK for him to have some movement, just very controlled and limited. From the therapist and the surgeon both, they said if we get thru the first 2 months, we are home free. The second phase which are months 3 and 4 these are the strength building months, once this is complete the surgeon tells me the dogs go back to being or doing their normal activity. Whether it's a hunting dog, show dog, agility dog or couch potato, they can resume their "normal" life. So that means by spring, Zeus should be back to the park to play with all you guys!!!snoopy
I'l keep you informed of his progress

We postponed the surgery until the 20th. I have done alot of research, and everything says the first 2 weeks are brutal!! Since he spends the night after surgery, I can pick him up on Friday, and I am using all my vacation to be home with him until after New Years. Almost a full 2 weeks. Just getting to the 20th is going to be the challenging part. He so much wants to play. And although he's in pain, he still does way more than he probably should be. I'm tempted to keep him on his leash BEFORE surgery! If this is any indications of his energy level after only a few weeks, I hate to think of what it's going to be like after 2 months!! I hope they have good drugd for both of us.

Well, Zeus had surgery yesterday. He will be coming home today. According to the surgeon, other than the size of plates and screws they had to use, it was a "text book" surgery. His ligamnet was completely torn, and the angle was changed from 28-29 degrees to 5 degrees. The left is also at 28-29 degrees and there is "a little" inflamation in that knee; but nothing looks to be torn, so with some strength building, supplements, and preventative care we will keep this from happening. I'll keep you posted on his homecoming. I'm sure I am not at all prepared for what's to come!

So much for the Really bad awful post op days. Zeus is doing AWESOMEapplause He was pretty sore the first couple days. After going outside, he was more than happy to come back in and take a rest...well that's all changed, he is now using his leg more often than not, he is still sore first thing in the morning, but after that, he seems quite comfortable. He has been off the pain meds for a couple days, and has been spending the last couple days out of the bathroom and in the living room with the family. He still is confined during the night, which means I am still sleeping on the bathroom floor too; but all in all he is doing great. I couldn't be happier cheer He never showed any bruising, and there was a little swelling that settled around his calf/ankle but that was gone by Monday. The scar is healing quite nicely, and his range of motion is almost fully regained. I hope the bones on the inside are doing as well as all of the exterior stuff.
Thanks for thinking such good thoughts for The Big Face. At this rate the next few weeks should be easy. I'll keep you updated

2 week check up is behind us!! applause His surgery sight is pretty much healed and the doctor is very happy with his range of motion. We are to continue "doing what we are doing", I should say we are to continue doing NOTHING. That would be more accurate. No running, jumping or playing, and still being on a leash while in the house, and while outside for bathroom breaks. Confined to the bathroom during the day and night. That means I am still sleeping on the floor too cry Oh well, the things a mother does for her kids!!
