 | | | | Dogs on Board! (DOB) is a proposed pilot project to allow full-size, non-assistance dogs on transit in cities and towns across Canada and the USA.
The main goals are:
* Increasing use of transit services by providing people with an option to private cars for transporting their dogs, and;
* Creating mobility options for pet owners who, for many reasons, do not use a car.
It is therefore designed to be equally important to transit and animal advocates, as a measure to support sustainable development in the broad sense of the term.
Background: In Europe it is the norm that people can take full-size non-assistance dogs on urban transit, regional trains, intercity trains and so on, though rarely on intercity buses, generally for half-price and sometimes for free, sometimes with a muzzle and nearly always with a leash, with the driver or staff empowered to remove transit customers and their pets if there are problems.
In Canada and the USA the situation is nearly the opposite, with only a handful of transit operators allowing full-size dogs on board, and, no, not Greyhound. Not Amtrak, either. Via Rail allows dogs... in a crate in the luggage room.
It seems clear that every day in Canada and the USA thousands and thousands (and thousands) of car trips are made to take dogs to parks which are out of walking range, or a little far to get to in a convenient amount of time. I think many of the people driving their dogs would like an alternative.
In addition, there are many American and Canadian pet owners who by choice or necessity do not drive cars, and would appreciate an increased range and number of places they can visit with their pets, including the workplace.
