If it's lickable- keep it! |
| Barked: Sat Nov 10, '07 9:28am PST | | | | | | Mom was told by my breeder that there's a personality difference between Dane's of color. Does anyone else find that's true if they know more than one color dane? Mom knows a blue dane that's very protective of his family and once he settles on the couch will nip you if bothered. I would never do that cause I'm a people pup! | | | | |

HELP!!! IT- MIGHT EAT- MEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!- ! |
| Barked: Wed Feb 13, '08 8:45pm PST | | | | | | Hey, sorry I didn't notice this thread earlier, but we've been nuts around here.....but what's new there, huh?
SO, let me tell you what Mom & some of her Dane owning friends have noticed. See, a bunch of them have Merles like me. The Merle that you know is different from us, 'cause all of us (6 total?) are pretty big clowns and fraidy cats.
We tend to be whiners, want things our way or no way, hide from nearly every sound we hear and are TOTALLY fascinated by tiny things. One thing Mom said, and the others have started to realize it is "owning a Dane (mainly a Merle) is like raising a mentally-challenged two year old." I know, it sounds mean on so many levels, and she doesn't mean it disrespectfuly! I swear! A friend of ours is over the TN state board of Autism (her 2 daughters are Autistic) and she said that I act like her oldset girl with my aversion to certain sounds and textures. Who knows, maybe there is something wrong with me....or some Merles in general......who knows?
About the fascination with tiny things, I mean I'll watch a ladybug (or anything microscopic) crawling across the floor and never go after it, but just stare intently at it like it's the best thing I've ever seen. I get upset if someone picks it up & puts it outside, then I pout.....for DAYS! I'll show them, won't I? Ending my fun like that, how dare they. BUT, if I come across a bug outside, then I run 'cause it might eat me seeing as how I'm so tiny and everything. Mom's heard me scream when I had a moth land on me! TRUST ME, that was SOOO scary!
Well, now that I've yapped your ears off, I hope this helps with your research. Let me know what you find out! | | | | |

If it's lickable- keep it! |
| Barked: Sat Mar 29, '08 5:25am PST | | | | | | That is so good to know since I'm a big baby and everyone wants to put a saddle on me, but I tend to lay down if anything goes on my back. Mom did some color research of Danes and has found each color has it's own 'challenges', like Harls are way too smart and think they are people so they get depressed if separated from the people in the house. Good thing I have other pups when Mom can't take me with her.
Life gets nuts around here too. But that's why we have groups. To catch up, keep intouch, and share life stories. Today's a beautiful day in NJ and I am trying to get the people to feed me breakfast. Next step is snoring in their ears on the bed with them. You'd think my size would get them out of bed, but it doesn't work cause they use me as a pillow.

"Let me be with- you always" |
| Barked: Mon Jun 8, '09 10:37am PST | | | | | | Hi, my name is Sally and I am new to the group. That is an interesting question, that color difference influences personality. There is no absolute evidence against that idea, but in my experience that doesn't make much sense from what I have learned in behavioral psychology.
The great danes that I know personally are; a black, a harl, a blue mantle, a merle mantle, a solid blue, a fawn, a couple other blacks, and a black mantle. One of my hobbies is actually observing their behavior and I have a hypothesis about what causes differences in behavior (some are more friendly, timid, aggressive, gentle, or serious); it is the behavior of the owners, the timing of spay/neutering (hormone changes), and the background of socialization that seem to influence personality. Of course, I would need to observe a larger population of great danes to have the data to fully back-up my assumption; however, from all the danes I have gotten-to-know, color doesn't appear to be as clear of an influencing factor as lifestyle differences
Color alleles, you would think, would have little to do with the behavioral alleles; but who knows for sure? Edited by author Mon Jun 8, '09 10:57am PST

I should also add the behaviors of my danes, since they are each a different color. Brutus the harlequin, has a very friendly disposition, Star and Betty do too but not as extremely mellow as Brutus. That makes me want to assume that gender affects personality, but I have met a male that was more like Star than Brutus, so that doesn't quite work; also, Star and Brutus aren't even 6 months yet so age may be a factor for their behaviors right now.
Star is a blue mantle, and a very intelligent girl, she retrieves consistently (unlike Brute or Betty whom only retrieve sparingly); Star learns quickly but is also very stubborn like her mom (so color doesn't make a difference between the females for that part of their personalities).
Betty is still very playful for a 2.5 year old, she is also very smart and stubborn, she is more attentive to strangers coming to the door, but I think age plays a part in that behavior.
All three are food motivated; however, Betty hates cheerios, Brutus is kind of ok with them, and Star loves them...I'm not sure what that means, but it is interesting to observe their differences and similarities since they are all related.Edited by author Mon Jun 8, '09 10:50am PST

Princess- Lady Bug
 Where's my- kids?I want to- play! |
| Barked: Wed Aug 19, '09 4:45am PST | | | | | | Hi guys!
I am princess Lady Bug my little girl's named me
Mom was thinking that the diffrence between me and my brother was because of our sex's we are only 2 month's apart. My brother is sampson and he is a black dane. I have patches as you can see We are both babies but mom has noticed since we came home that I am very calm and love to gently give kisses and love to lay around with the kids lazily. However mom says my brother acts like he is add and knocks things over as he gallops through the house. He never calms down untill we go to our bed..Mom wants to get us ready to be out of our huge crate{its as long as the counch } But sampson constantly gets into everything and i wont sleep with out him i cry all night..Our biggest brother Moose is a lot older then us were not sure how old he is but mom keeps him in the house all the time. She say's it is because he came from animal control and wasnt treated nicely and already had a hard life and deserves constant company and the chance to be lazy and relax.. Before mom got me and sammy, Moose ate most of the counch because he was lonley BOY does dad still talk about that!!!! Mom says he needed friends so she let my kids pick out me and my brother.. Moose is very calm and loves naps and doesnt mind our littelst girl who is 4 and even let her sit on him and color his collar! Moose is also black but he is also half english mastiff and dane. So she think's it may be sure to color for personality but also the age and sex of us. Moose is fixed but sampson and I are still young mom says. She is going to wait untill our first heat or 2 so that we have time to get smarter and bulk up some.....
hope to see all of you in the forum's woof and waggels!
