We went to the Avalon off leash dog park last weekend and had a great time! But... there are holes in the fence (it doesn't always touch the ground) that I am worried about Helix getting through. Has anyone been to any of the other dog parks? Are any of them fully fenced and reasonably secure? I would appreciate any advice smile Thanks!

None of the parks are perfect, Helix. Best suggestion would be for your human to practice a reliable recall and to learn where to have you under control in the park and where it's safe to let you run.

We have been to four other parks in Saskatoon (other than Avalon).

1. Closest to us is Junor (or Hampton Village) park behind the airport. It has barbed wire along the road, so we don't usually take that path until us dogs are tired and less adventurous. The rest of the park, around the airport property, is completely fenced with deer fencing. A very small dog could get through the fencing, but most of the paths aren't that close.

2. Worst park in Saskatoon, in our opinion, is the Montgomery dog park on 11th Street. There is no fencing and it is a stretch that runs between 11th Street and the railway tracks near the large elevators.

3. Chief Whitecap Park is great. Once again, just barbed wire and/or deer fencing as you enter, but the best paths are well beyond any fencing. You can go down toward the river (there is a mid-level path through trees or go right down to the beaches), and there is a path that runs along the top with clear land on one side and trees on your other side.

4. Sutherland Beach is also good, although it's been a very long time since we've been. The Circle Drive side has chainlink fencing, but most of the paths stay some distance from that anyway.

Sorry, I can't review Silverwood off-leash park. Haven't been there yet. Maybe Gio or Romeo can help you out with that one. It's their regular spot, I believe.

Happy Tails, Helix! wave Hope that helps.

Thanks for your help!

We've worked VERY hard on Helix's recall and we've made huge amounts of progress (he will now reliably come when called when there are NO distractions). But the fact is, he will never have a reliable recall when distractions like other dogs are around- it's just his nature. We will continue to work on it, distractions or no distractions though and maybe when he's older we'll have some luck. If we can't find a dog park we feel secure in, then I guess we just won't go. Winter may be better at the Avalon park because snow will cover the holes I think. He does go to daycare every week so he certainly isn't lacking dog socialization or a regular bit of good exercise! I'll send Gio a PM about Silverwood though, thanks!

Hi again Helix & humans! wave
I wouldn't give up on off-leash parks just yet. Usually, if you go with friends that have dogs, your dog will be happy to stay with the pack.
Also, I think Chief Whitecap park would work quite well for you. Just start off on-leash until you get into the park and just before you leave the park (you have to park along the road). Also, Sutherland Beach is another one that would probably work really well for you. Great natural trails.
And there's another one I've heard of, but never been to, on McOrmond Road. Maybe someone else has an idea of what that park is like.
I'd love to hear reviews of Silverwood & McOrmond if anyone cares to share! big grin
