I've had Chooy for a little over a year. I was told he was a Cocker Spaniel mix, possibly Lab. I was looking online and when I found Field Spaniels, I thought, that's Him! But I'm not sure, what do you guys think? He is a medium size dog, about 18 inches at the withers, 40 lbs. Almost all black except for a little patch of white on his chest and a little on his paws when the hair grows out. He's definitely a spaniel, he has the Cocker-like ear and face, but longer and slightly different. He has that water resistant kind of coat, and his tail is long and feathered, kind of like a Golden Retriever when it's held straight. He is sooooo sweet and gentle, and his favorite thing is to jump in the water at the park and chase the ducks. shrug

I would say cocker-lab is more likely actually. For the first reason, fieldies are a lot rarer to find, and usually owned by enthusiasts who don't let their dogs wander around and make other dogs pregnant... accidents happen of course, but the sheer number of cockers against fieldies speak in the favor of a cocker spaniel. Cockers and labs are both very popular breeds and therefore a lot more likely to end up together unsupervised. As for cocker spaniels and field spaniels, they are so much alike, that sometimes it is hard to tell one from the other, especially if you can't see the size of them. When it's a mix, the labrador would compensate the size of a cocker, making the end result bigger than a normal cocker, how much bigger, is difficult to tell.

Your dogs side profile looks very cocker spaniel like, the snout is a lot rounder than fieldie's normally is, cuter in a way. But the front of his face looks more fieldie like, but could be inherited from a lab as well as from a cocker. Of course, then there's the possibility of English Springer Spaniel, which is very much like a fieldie in structure, and the biggest difference would be the color of the coat, but your dog is black right? Again a rare color in fielies, but common in both labs and cockers...

The bottom line is though, that you got yourself a lovely dog, and where ever he came from isn't really important - but surely interesting I know!
