I have a 1 year old GSP, and he is intact. How many of you all have had yours neutered? Has it really helped calm them down?

I was wondering becuase mine is (of course) OFF the wall! And after his little "escape" i'm thinking that maybe fixing him would help!

Any suggestions?

Not sure neutering him would help with his escape. And it might calm him down a little, but GSPs are crazy for most of their lives. The key is LOTS of exercise-physically and mentally. Were you planning on breeding him? If not, you should neuter him anyway. Eliminates/decreases health risks and you don't have to worry about him escaping and impregnating any females. Just my 2 cents.

Spike is my fifth male and I have never castrated any of them. Most vets will recommend it and every time I take Spike in to a certain young vet she wants to do it! They say having them is another risk for cancer (If you don't have them you can't get cancer in them) but I never had probelms with any of mine. shrug

My boys have always been under control after the first year or so but the first year IS tough. Spike is now ten and you can leave the doors open and he'll saty in. But I worked HARD with him. He was the worst of the five to "control" but I persisted.

It depends mostly on whether you want to breed him, I guess, I don't think Spike have ever met a female in heat! shock

We only bred two of the boys and one didn't even take. We lost one of them early (and he was the best for breeding I think) and not with Spike because even though he loves hunting he's STILL crazy on the hunting field.shrug I gave up on field work after two years...couldn't make him settle down. But he IS the perfect PET!

I honestly could care less wether he breeds or not, I just don't want him getting hurt again frown. I usually run with him every night, about a mile or two (I just had a baby 3 mo. ago and am trying to loose baby weight lol).

This year has been rough! He is just off the wall, and I love him and don't mind his hyperness im just afraid of him trying to get out and roam again.

My BILaw adopted Way's brother at the same time we did and he had a health problem and it was mandatory that they fixed him and he seems to be about 30-40% less hyper than Waylon.

Either way im more concerned for his safety than his hyperness! lol

He is miserable now, he is on 24/7 indoor kennel confinement and is only allowed outside a few times a day for bathroom breaks frown. I just dont want him having to go through this again frown

If you don't care if he breeds and he is already 1 year then I see no real reason to leave him intact. You will constantly have to have him on a leash when you go anywhere to prevent any accidently breedings. He probably can't go to the dog park and be off leash and so on and so forth. You can also prevent furture health problems caused by being intact like prosate cancer, etc. I don't see any problem leaving a male intact if you plan to breed him and his is of a good pedigree and has had proper health screenings b/f breeding. But if you are not planning to breed and could careless whether you do or not then just go ahead and have it done. Just think you could take him anywhere (other peoples home, vacation) for the rest of his life and not have to worry about marking and he will be healthier in the long run probably too.

Is your brother neutered because his problem is heritable? You may be able to pass on those traits too, even if you don't have it yourself. Its just something to think about.

Neutering didn't have much effect on Jaeger's energy level at all BOL, thats just one of the treasures of GSP's- the constant energy.

You could try biking with him though, that lets you go much faster, so the dog gets more exercise quicker. We're trying to get a bike attachment right now so that Jaeger can run beside us safely. We also use a "chuck-it" and do swimming in the summer time way to go

you asking about desexing you GSP.
we have a maniack and we just got him desexed and that calmed him down a decent amount. if you havent done it. i think you should really consider doing it. Albert used to bounce of any wall he could find. now he is happy to just sit calmly with us but he still runs like a maniac when we do and when he gets bored. but yeah. i say do it. but see other suggestions.dog
