everything is- mine ! |
| Barked: Wed Sep 19, '07 4:31pm PST | | | | | | Hi everyone
I wonder if you can help Mommy...the vet ok's me to have a can of fancy feast once in awhile as long as it is in the same lines as the MD food that i eat for being diabetic. But she kept the list...can someone just tell me a few kinds that are ok to eat instead of printing out the whole list again. I would really appreciate it and so would Mommy.
By the way, they took me off insulin for a month to see how I do on the special food alone. My sugar was fine for the whole day at the vet. I hope it stays like that. I hate the shots.

Toulouse here! I'm so glad to hear that you are off insulin and on a diet! I really hope you can keep your sugar levels low! I am borderline diabetic and on a special diet as well. Not sure how long I can go on like this before I need insulin.
However, I would ask Merlin or Morgan about Fancy Feast. I know Morgan eats it and is doing very well on it! They are the experts to ask and will be able to give you plenty of good information.
Good Luck my friend!! Hope you continue to do well on your new diet!
Your Friend,

There's a whole list of the varieties that are low carb here: http://www.geocities.com/jmpeerson/canfood.html There are many other brands you can eat, too, besides Fancy Feast. Just make sure that the carb content is 10% or less. You can just eat these foods instead of the prescription food. Prescription food isn't any better for you than regular canned food.

Where's the- Food?
|
| Barked: Mon Dec 17, '07 9:21pm PST | | | | | | Fancy Feast is the food of choice for many sugarcats. Keep away from the gravy varieties, and keep away from the fish. Another good variety is actually the Petsmart brand "Authority". It's less expensive than Fancy Feast, and comes in bigger cans as well. (Mom always had to feed two of us, so the bigger cans served better.)
Some vets like to label these brands as 'icky' because you don't need a prescription for them (and don't have to pay $1 plus a can). My mom actually asked her vet about it before switching -- and mom's vet said that while Fancy Feast might be, and I quote, "Crack for Cats", if it worked for me, and my blood sugar levels stayed consistent where they belonged, then why shouldn't I have it?
Of course, the best thing is if mommy can cook it for you, and there are a lot of cats out there on a home-made diet. But lets face it, most of our parents are way too busy, and they'd rather spend the time cuddling us than cooking.

| Barked: Thu Dec 20, '07 7:44am PST | | | | | | Sorry Jules....mom didn't have time to make me homemade food. She tried once to make me homemade treats (crunchy kind...my fave), but the whole house ended up smelling awful (and the treats were not good)
One of her favorite websites for me was http://www.felinediabetes.com
(This site is the one that said that fish had something in it not great)
They do have raw food recipies there....(but eiw!)

Who is mom- telling to "stop- it?" |
| Barked: Fri Dec 28, '07 4:16pm PST | | | | | | Hello. I've been diabetic for 5 years now. Still learning new things (for instance, I'm on dry purina DM and just found out it's not that good for me).
I saw people comment that diabetics should not be on dry food. Why not? Mom wants to get me off the Purina DM now (if it's not that good for me, why spend the money on it).
Right now mom is feeding me chicken for breakfast/dinner to make sure I eat. My vet said this is fine (I recently went into a diabetic coma in October and was also diagnosed with kidney failure at the same time).
But if there are better foods for me than purina DM... I'd like to try it! As long as I still get my chicken!

| Barked: Sat Dec 29, '07 10:17am PST | | | | | | Sammy, dry food is high in carbs, not a species appropriate diet, leaves cats in a constant state of dehydrations. Purina DM is poor quality food that doesn't help diabetics. Even the vet who created it and holds the patent doesn't recommend it for any clients. This web site has info on why dry food should never bed fed to any cat: http://www.catinfo.org
Low carb canned food is best. The groups link section has the link to the famous Binkys' canned food chart. Use that to find low carb canned foods. Look for those that have less than 10% in carbs. Fancy Feast is a popular inexpensive brand. You can feed expensive higher quality premium foods but that's not necessary.
Keep in mind that changing from dry food to low carb canned food has a big impact on your blood glucose levels and insulin need. It's not uncommon to see a huge 100 point drop in levels within a few days of a diet change. This is why you must be hometesting so you can catch the big drop in levels and reduce the insulin dose to avoid causing hypoglycemia.
