We thought we'd do a dish on apples to further plug the fabulous Iron Pup contest!

Apples happen to be one of my most favorite things. Mom used to keep a bowl of them on the kitchen counter until I started helping myself. I won't go into the details, but she wasn't pleased.

The humble apple doesn't have much in the way of vitamins or minerals, but it is loaded with fiber. Fiber helps to regulate blood sugar and lower cholesterol, which are neat tricks if you are diabetic or have liver or heart disease. Apples are also extremely low in fat and sodium and so are great choices for dogs with pancreatic disease. The peel has loads of good stuff like quercitin (a bioflavonoid that helps to minimize allergic reactions) and antioxidants that help to reduce cell damage.

One of the neatest things about apples is that they help to clean your teeth. They don't compare to brushing, but if you don't like to brush they are a tasty alternative.

Apples are coming into season (buy Washington!) but are easy to eat year-round as applesauce. Applesauce is delightful mixed in with your regular meals and along with pumpkin is a great crusader against the runs.

OMD!!! Great plug for apples! One of the best things about the Fall are apples!! Mmmmm super crispy ones! Mom likes to go to the green market and shares some slices of apples with me!

And sometimes when the pears aren't there, Mom uses the apple instead for the harvest meatloaf recipe. Now that is mmm mmm good!dancing

Puree apples with the skin give loads of vitamins E. If you pup gets fish oil, they need additional Vitamin E. For dogs to digest veggie, they should be cooked or puree otherwise they won't get any of the nutrients. Cook the apple and puree it for your pup's meal and you know what they say. An apple a day, keeps the vet away. big grin
