I've heard that "greenie" bones are dangerous - some of the ingredients are not digestible...anyone else here this??

I know they changed the receipe just recently and is supposed to be better for the pets than before, but I also heard that you have to be careful when they eat them. Some of the bites might get stuck in their throats. I gave one to Bo to try and she loved it but I am afraid to buy more just incase something would happen.

I don't know about greeneis but i made the miskake of giving dakotah bones called a freshies. he loves them but the next morning his whole body smelled like a litter box REALLY badly. it took two days and two baths to get that horrible scent off of him. Then we had to clean our other dog and anything else that he came in contact with. I dont recommend these bones ever to anyone because of the odor it creates in the oil of a dogs skin. Not good, really stinky. As far as my research has gone though these are not dangerous.

I knew of someone through my vet whose dog died from greenies. My vet said that the problem is that the are so delicious that the dogs tend to not chew them but maybe bite it twice then try & swallow it down. Especially if other dogs are waiting to take it away. Kinda like young children and hotdogs...choke hazard. The dogs try to hock it back up but then choke on it.
But here is the REAL problem with greenies...the greenies don't show up on an x-ray, they had to autopsy the poor dog to see what really happened. By then the people were hysterical, the dog gone...all over a treat. cry

There was definitely a problem with Greenies. Even though the recipe has been changed, I'm not going to buy any for my dog.
I also won't give her any rawhide bones ever again. Rawhide is just not digestible enough.
There are plenty of better choices available. Why risk it?

Yes. I have heard of dogs getting them stuck in their digestive tracks and some deaths. My groomer said a good test to see how a treat digests is to put it in a glass of water and see what happens. She said the greenie felt like plastic and soap. I threw away the open ones and returned the un-opened package. I am sticking to meaty or biscuit type treats.

we just avoid it and go right to the american made, high quality rawhides. they clean teeth and are hard to eat fast. not sure if that helps, but had to put my two cents in!!!

Oh my gosh...Greenies are dangerous?! (Too bad my Mom read this because Greenies are one of my favorite treats and they help keep my teeth clean). We're going to try the soaking in water thing to see how fast they dissolve. Of course, I eat my Greenies like everything else I eat...GULP, GULP, GULP and my parents have noticed how fast I eat them...so I'm probably getting pieces that are too large and could create an obstruction. My Dad said (after reading this thread) that he's going to try breaking them up into small pieces with a hammer. If that doesn't work, Mom and Dad have decided I can't have them any more....back to the Milk Bones, I guess (but, they're pretty good, too.) Thanks for the heads up, guys!! shock

Just to add what I've heard, our trainer said that Greenies have too much gelatin in them, and that is what makes them dangerous. I love my compressed rawhide bone. It is stinky but good!
