Hi new bully mom,
Establish leadership. Put him on his back and hold him there till he stops fighting you. This way he'll know who the packleader is. Obediance class is a must, you don't want him at a 100+ pounds dragging you around the neighborhood. Don't allow him to jump up on you. (laying on you is a different thing.) laugh out loud and counter surfing is not a good thing either. You don't want them jumping up on the counter to sneak a snack or burning their paws on the stove. I lost a 1/2 package of hotdog rolls to Liberty b/4 I knew she would get up and surf the counters. That's a sneaky trick, it's a good thing they don't know that sound travels to mom & dad's ears too. wink
And plastic milk cartons make a great, cheap chew toy when teething. Jam and I would go out for our morning walks and gather the milk containers from the blue bins and she would go through them like crazy. Just stick a milk bone in it and watch thme go to town. applause
And while they are still puppies, sit back and watch him grow before your eyes.
You're going to love you bully baby.

from a bully mom that won't get another breed.

RIP Brute

Got food?

Congratulations! Brute is my first bullmastiff, too and boy is he a God-sent. I recomend the AKC book Bullmastiff. It is great reading about the origin and characteristics of the breed. It helped me tremendously. One of the most important things you can do is socialize! We took Brute to the dog park, on walks where there were many people like outdoor shopping plazas and restaraunts. Good luck with your new best friend!

Hi There,
I've been breeding, training, showing & doing Bullmastiff rescue for more than 25 yrs now, I'm also a trainer & behaviorist.
I belive in ONLY using postive reinforcement when training a Bullmastiff (or any dog for that matter) but bullies can have a stuborn streak & if forced into something they don't enjoy then you are going to run into not only resistance but problems. I make training FUN, it's a must. I NEVER recommend forcing a dog on his back to show your dominance, however you can make him sit, down then roll on his back for a nice tummy rub, this puts you in the dominant position however it's very enjoyable for your dog & your dog will not be frightned of you if because you've pinned him to the ground on his back while he struggles trying to figure out why you are attacking him like that. Remember training should always be fun for both you & your dog. With pups keep the sessions short, leash training I start with the "follow Me" game, where you do anything to gain your pups attention by clapping, calling (say anything except the command word "heel") until he understands what it means, if you would like more detailed training information there is a considerable amount on my web site, the url is:

If you have any specific training questions or behavioral questions you can reach me at: dext0rr.bullmastiffs@verizon.net
Bullmastiffs are just the sweetest dogs in the world they are highly intelligent but get bored easily so keeping them mentally stimulated is highly recommended or they will find things to do on their own! They are the most devoted dogs I have ever known, they know what you are thinking, feeling & are always there without asking them when you need a friend, a guardian, and always give their love unconditionally.

Boeger is our first Bullmastiff! They are great dogs and very intelligent. They do live up to their name, "Bull!" As you know, you as their parent, have to be that much more "bull headed!" A consent routine during the potty training period is a must!

Enjoy your bully as I know we will! Keep in touch!
