How do you curb herding?

My younger Collie ,Goose, is getting bigger and bigger and his barking and herding is starting to become a nuesance to everyone around me. Especially KIDS! Today he somehow got loose from my leash and ran after a kid barking and even jumping and nipping at the kid. Now for most Collie owners, they would probably understand that as a herding instinct that most Collies have, but for the average Joe, it is interpureted as an attack.

Goose has done this once or twice before in the past when kids were brought into the dog park. He would run and bark at them and sometimes jump and nip. In my eyes he doesn't do this to harm or kill as terriers would do because he stops after a few seconds. But this kind of behavior from him could lead into a lawsuit in the future.

The reason I got a Collie was because of their gentle demeanor to humans, especially kids. But with Goose I think he really has a strong inborn instinct to herd, especially kids. My other Collie Maverick is quite the opposite and is very gentle towards everyone around him. Goose is about 10 months old now and is getting bigger and more intimidating towards kids. And when kids run away when he barks, it just makes the situation worse.

I know that I shouldn't be in an environment where kids are present, but that only manages the problem and doesn't solve the problem. So if anyone has ever had this problem with their herding dogs before, please let me know how you dealt with it.

Thanks!
Molly

Well, I recently got a new pup who we called Aly. And she loves to herd and boss us around too. Especially us kids, we've figured out that basically she see us and other kids as her sisters. She loves to play around and nip us all the time. And that's just how it is but if it's getting quite bad you could always get a RC Car and exercise Goose's herding on that.

i am curious as to how this situation has turned out. has the herding behavior become more or less or has it stopped? that is one behavior that ebony mae doesn't seem to have one of her playmates (a shepherd) is always herding us when we're all together, but that doesn't seem to be ebony mae's thing.

now jumping to greet people and nipping when she is playing are other stories.
