There was a beagle, about two weeks ago, bitten by a poisonous rattle snake in back of the park on the trails. The snakes had just come out of hibernation, and evidently the dog was off his leash and over-interested in an off-trail rattler, which he found in the marsh area.

When an animal is bit by one of these snakes, the anti-venom MUST be used within 4 hours or the animal will die. The Park Service said that the anti-venom is available from most area vets but if not, the Detroit Zoo has a supply.

Please be CERTAIN to keep your dog on the leash outside of the park, in the trail areas. It is illegal to kill these snakes, because they are on the endangered species lists. They will probably stay off of the trails because of all the activity, but in the rest of their habitat, they are a danger.
