Mom wrote my story.

Zuki was hit by a car in April of 2001. He was at the parking lot of the dog park and saw a cat across the street. He darted across the road and was hit. The jeep did not stop and Zuki flew 30 feet. His main injury was that his left hip was broken in two places. After fundraising enough money to pay for the surgery, he had a long recovery. The vet said if he didn't start using all four legs, he would have to have one amputated. We gave him leash walks (previously he was able to roam at the dog park) to slow him down enough to work all four legs. Zuki eventually was able to use all four legs, but has a funny trot to his walk and can't quite go as fast as before. He can easily be knocked down because of his instability to his back legs. His sister Sienna finds this tough because she used to have a great time wrestling with him. Now, she is simply too rough after a while and we have to stop her from working to hard on him. Zuki's more recent struggles have come since we have lived in Seattle and given him mostly leash walks on pavement. His back paw which has less sensation has been scraped and formed a wound that hasn't really healed. He tends to buckle his back leg and this also hurts the spot. No fur has grown back since he licks it (we assume it itches him). Vets have recommended amputation, puppy prozac, and behavior therapy. At this point, he wears his collar whenever we are not around and at night. We wish he could be without it but he seems to open his wound back up again when not supervised. We wish we could help Zuki more and any suggestions you have we are open to. At this point, we think the amputation is not the best choice as he does use the leg for walking and hoisting himself up onto the couch.
