Did you know that some of us have single layered hair? I was wondering why I looked so different than other Paps. I'm not as full as some and in the winter I can tell it. I think I am elegant though. Not having all the hair my ears sure look big. Real big. Is anyone else like me? Sure would like to talk about it.My mom is putting boots on me next year.I have a real nice coat for winter. That helps.
going to bed now so I will snuggle with mom

Papillons are supposed to have a sigle layer coat. It's incorrect if they have a double layer coat, but some still do.

BTW, your baby is still very young. All my Paps continued to grow coat 'til about 3. Ferris is 2 1/2 now and he is still growing coat.

Two of my Paps, Andrew and Ferris, were fuzz balls from day one. Andrew at 10 months had more coat than most adults Paps. However, my Juliette had NO hair until she was 18 months. I called her my little caterpillar because I literally thought she would never get coat. She never got the coat that Andrew and Gabriel have, but she does have ample coat.

Your baby probably won't get super long hair, but she will get more tail plume and more body coat as she matures. I'm almost sure of it.

Hi,wave
Thank you so much for your information. She is getting fuller around her neck but her legs are thin and around her belly she doesn't have too much. Anyway her hair grows i don't mind she is my baby but I was just wondering about it. I had heard there were two different types from a lady that breeds them and she also is a judge in competitions. Mimi is skinny but boy is she lively. Just love her. Thank you for the info. Love to talk to Pap lovers.

Um, maybe she was talking about Papillons and Phalenes. Phalenes have dropped ears, kinda like a Cocker Spaniel.

Andrew looking at your picture and you are 4 and Mimi will be 2 it is 2 years difference and your hair is so much fuller and thicker. I know what a Phalene is as they are classified the moth of the breed. It's just that I was worried about her hair being so thin and short. I see so many that are so full even when they are so young. I guess it depends on the genetics of the mom and dad. Thanks for all the info though. Paps are so beautiful and graceful. and fast. I couldn't get over how fast they are. My Pappi-Poo , BayLee can jump my two foot fencing so I have to keep my eye on her for sure.I went to the mail box one day and she was in the yard. I bent to look in and looked down and there was BayLee . I laughed like heck it was so funny and her tail was a waggin.I sure hope she don't teach Mimi how to do that yet. Have a great day and we are all going to lounge and relax .

Yes, that is what is so interesting and great about Papillons. Some breeds are short coated and that is all they are. Labs, they all have the same coat length.

Other breeds are long coated like Shih Tzu. All Shih Tzu have the same coat lenght.

Paps are all inbetween. Just like they are all different colors, some of them have shorter or longer coats. That is what I think is so wonderful.

Coat length is genetic so it depends on the lines. Generally, show lines carry more coat and those are probably the pictures you are seeing. Andrew in his picture is actually 18 months old. All of his relatives have long hair. Nutrition, exercise, and grooming also play a role. I don't know what that breeder was talking about when she said there are two types based on coat. . . she is mistaken.

You can read the standard here:
http://www.papillonclub.org/papstandard.html
The above page has the current standard as well as the two previous standards.

Also, this page has some pics to go along with the standard:

I think the 4th picture talks about coat.

Their hais is very thin. Lhasas have thicker hairs so don't worry if your baby has thin hair. As long as there are no bald spots, you have nothing to worry about. Her hair will keep growing and getting fuller with time. In a year you will be surprised at how much longer it has gotten.
