but not fully excepted. perhaps i'm being a little stubborn, but i refuse to give up without at least trying. i'm looking forward to taking my koko to obiedence school this wknd and starting her training. baby steps, hopefully in the right directions.

Any loud noise/strange object on the sidewalk/ loud kid/ fast moving human startles her and makes her want to run for the hills. I actually put a harness on her as well, because she has wiggled out of her leash and collar before -- right into traffic! Talk about a heart attack! 
So, if you can desentisize her to loud and sudden noises and movements , then she might do just fine. Good luck and let us know what works for you!  | | | | |

We would take her to the dog park (we have a large one here, over an acre) and walk around the outside with her so that she would get used to staying with us when there are other dogs around us. I made sure that I have treats with me because if she sees someone she's interested in she will go visit, but the treat will ususally trump that urge. If we are out camping or somewhere else like that she is usually on a long line, but if we are with another dog we know that she will stay near the dog. | | | | |

I take Winnie to a dog beach (which is off-leash). There are only cones that outline which areas are ok for dogs. So far (knock on wood), so good. I k now I'm not supposed to have treats (but I am armed with them, just in case), and I consistently give them to her when she comes. ("Come" is used like it's Christmas, birthdays and something fantastic... I say it enthusiastically and give a small nibble of her favorite treat.) So, she knows "Come" means there's something great in store for her. 
However, for the most part, she always sticks right by me. (Even at the regular dog park.) Perhaps you can start off leash training at an enclosed dog park?
Winnie loves little girls and has (from time to time) started to wander off hoping to join the little girl and her family. (You'd think she was looking for new owners!) And, at first she would be disoriented and know that I was calling her, but couldn't quite figure out where I was. It took awhile for her to start "looking" for me, and I would treat her once she found me.
Some trainers recommend playing hide and seek with your dog, and treating them once they find you. Perhaps this is a game you can play at the dog park?

| | Barked: Thu Jul 12, '07 9:44pm PST | | | | | | My fiance's brother has a lab pup that is no where as well behaved as our shiba, but when it comes to being off leash she is. That makes us a little jealous  and makes us not want to give up the fight either (yes, keep hope alive)!
Many a times we've thought he knew where he was and wouldn't wonder off (like in times of walking the short distance from the car to the dog park gate) but we would be wrong and off he went with us chasing behind.
We've found the most success by really tiring him out at the dog park or on long walks/runs. After this, he really has no energy to dart away regardless of what he sees and may be interested in. That's when we start our off-leash training, (since he doesnt seem to always be treat motivated), and it has been moderately successful. Also, during this time, we stick to familiar scenerios (like following us from the parking garage of our complex to our front door while dragging his leash - just in case we need to suddenly step on it to stop him from bolting). Hopefully this "tiring out" method will help you.

The only success I've had is when another dog is with us that can be off a leash- she will follow that dog and not run off. On several occassions I've thought that she seemed tired enough to actually obey me....only to be an hour late to wherever I was going from trying to get her back after she ran off. | | | | |

sometimes my parents take me on a walk around my house without leash and I don't run away and the only reason I don't run away is coz my parents are usually carrying my doggy treats or my favorite thing ...boiled chicken breast | | | | |

I'd have to protect him if they came too close. I will stay in the house if the front screen is left unlocked (3 paws outside the screen door counts as being inside). When I am very good we will go out for a run. Dad is getting a little long in the tooth and can't run as far as he once did with me. I really don't want to go off leash as I would still have to show him where home is. Momo | | | | |
