I have been giving your problem some thought. Some things I have learned :
1. Give the old dog attention not the puppy. Ignore the new dog. This sends a message to both dogs as who is who in the pack.

2. Be ready for growling and things to sound ugly for a while. The older dog has to put the puppy in its place and teach it the rules. My dogs have never drawn blood or hurt each other but it has sounded like the end of the world. My older dog just holds the puppy down with its paw.

After all the introductions and lessons are learned my Gordon has adapted nicely to new dogs coming in to our home. Hope this help. Please know I am not a professional dog anything.... and you use this advice at your own risk.... laugh out loud

Later.

thanks tez. that is good advice. and encouraging, since he is very good with almost all dogs, but there are a few where it does sound like the end of the world. there was a golden retreiver across the street that he finally accepted after he grew up a bit, and another one that he actually lets into bed with us, but usually he is very jealous. im going to look at a 4mos old gordon who lives with 20 others, so he knows dog rules.and i think that would be easier than a smaller one
