Starsky
who me ?? i- didnt do it!! |
| Barked: Sun Feb 4, '07 9:53am PST | | | | | | Hi , i am considering getting a second husky . i think that starsky is suffering from a bit of seperation anxiatey. During the day he is outside in his kennel run (12ft x 12ft) , but i have noticed that he has been clawing/scratching and chewing away at the inside of his kennel. He has never tried to escape or dig out under the fence. He gets lots of attention and plenty of walks , has plenty of chewy kongs but does'nt do very well on his own.
So here is the question. If i buy another Sibe , probably a pup ,there are few dog shelters locally and adoption of another sibe is highly unlikely as they are'nt that common in Ireland, how will the two of them get along? I know that Starsky sometimes likes to play rough with my sisters German shepard , will he be rough with a 8/10 week old puppy?I have spoke to a few breeders about this subject but the all tell me the same thing, that they will be fine. i now fell that they will tell you anything just to get a sale.
Would walking the two at the same time be a problem. I have looked in almost every pet store in my area but no-one has any double harness type equipment at all. Is this type of equipment available to buy online?
Any advice is greatly recieved. Thanks from Paul and Starsky.

Monte Bear
I'm a little dog- & I can fit! |
| Barked: Sat Feb 10, '07 7:25pm PST | | | | | | Hi! You should be able to find a double harness online. (www.petco.com / www.petsmart.com ?) Most pet stores in the US sell them, although with huskies, I'd recommend keeping them on individual leashes and training them to walk next to your leg. The double will give them more space from you, and at least in my experience, they have tended to pull more. So, I have a couple doubles, but I never use them.
As for a second dog, it MIGHT be a good idea, but huskies tend to be a little rougher with newcomers. Your current dog will be fighting for attention and to be the alpha... so, it'll work out in the long run, but you will have to be present when they are together until you are SURE they will not try to de-throne the other... It always depends on each individual dog, but you might want to consider a less agressive dog that won't challenge your current one? Just a thought.
Hope that helps in terms of getting one person's opinion!

Mariya- {pronounced- Mariah}
Queen of the- Fireflies!
|
| Barked: Thu Feb 15, '07 8:47am PST | | | | | | We have 3, and when I walk them I use either 3 of the same length leashes or, a triple coupler, they all walk well together. I do not agree with the breeder that told you they will be fine, especially if you already know he's a rough playmate, huskies do play rough, and we kept Mariya at bay when Jonah was a baby, she was way to rough with him. All play time was supervised when he was a puppy, now they do fine, and I think Mariya is wishing that she had been nicer, he's bigger than her, and gives her a run for her money, Luna is just easy going. spot
Talk to me- dammit! |
| Barked: Sat Feb 17, '07 5:35pm PST | | | | | | We got Kiesha when spot was about 5 or 6 months old, she was smaller than my kitten. After a while I got sick of locking my cat with my puppy downstairs, cause all Kiesha would ever do was howl and spot would watch from the outside. I found spot when he met with Kiesha was alittle rough, but he would never snap at her he would just approach her with an open jaw as if to rough her up but not hurt. In the end when she had enough of being trodden on, she ended up snapping back at him she ended up putting him in his place. You should always try to be around to supervise for the majority of the time, otherwise the little pup might end up hurt. Eventually they will get on like a house on fire. Often when i am standing in the backyard they will playfight around my feet, and follow me where ever i walk still fighting. As for running together, I often try to do it because i cant always have someone with me to take one dog. Its very difficult with the huskies cause its in thier nature to pull, but with the gentle leader on the real puller its not as bad. I am currently trying out the haltis on both dogs to see if that works, but i havent seen anything that attatches to both dogs as yet. good luck | | | | |

Meika
Loud is- best!!!!! |
| Barked: Mon Oct 1, '07 5:13am PST | | | | | | we felt the same thing with Drake we decided to get Meika to keep him company.. our neigbours have said that they never hear a peep out of them anymore (other that the occasional play howl)... I would recommend that if you do get another one just make sure that they are supervised at all times until they both settle in...
We kept Meika in the bathroom and Drake out the back until we felt that they were used to each other and Meika was big enough not to get hurt too badly should something happen..
With walking them I walk our two together all the time... I use separate leads... I find if I hold them in the same hand I tend to get dragged but if I have one in each hand its fine.
Also check out the Hali's... I have one for each of them and think they are brilliant.. not a fan of the harnesses as they tend to pull alot harder...

Mishka
Be prepared to- get sassed!!! |
| Barked: Sun Apr 27, '08 7:47pm PST | | | | | | When I got my 2nd husky, I got him as a puppy and Mishka was already 1.5 yrs...she kicked his butt all the time, but now the tables have turned and he's bigger than her and kicks her butt all the time!! But other than the rough housing, they can't live without eachother.
As far as walking it's SOOO much easier to have a coupler. It's difficult if you have two seperate leashes since the dogs can go two different directions
